An exceptional Vin Jaune from Jura, an expression of a unique terroir
The estate
Founded in 1692, Domaine Grand is a family-owned estate located in Passenans in Jura. Now run by Emmanuel and Nathalie Grand, the estate spans 9.5 hectares following a restructuring in 2015 that favored quality over quantity. Certified organic since 2021, the estate was named "Winemaker of the Year" by the Guide Hachette in 2020. Emmanuel and Nathalie grow five grape varieties on parcels carefully selected for their outstanding terroirs.
The vineyard
This Château-Chalon comes from parcels located within the namesake appellation, one of the most prestigious and exclusive in Jura. The Savagnin vines are planted on grey marl soils, a preferred terroir for this grape variety. These limestone terroirs give the wine its hallmark minerality and aromatic complexity. The vineyard is farmed organically, with hand-harvesting and rigorous grape sorting.
The vintage
The 2017 vintage benefited from favorable conditions that allowed for optimal ripening of Savagnin. The grapes reached an excellent level of maturity, providing the balance needed to craft a great Vin Jaune.
Winemaking and aging
The Château-Chalon Vin Jaune 2017 was produced according to the traditional method specific to the appellation. After vinification, the wine was aged for at least six years and three months in oak barrels without topping up. During this period, a veil of yeasts naturally developed on the surface of the wine, giving it its distinctive walnut aromas and its remarkable aging capacity.
