Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for Morgon "Javernières" 2023

Tasting notes

Colour
This French red wine reveals a deep ruby hue verging on garnet, with violet highlights in its youth. Its clarity is brilliant and its colour beautifully intense.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet proves complex, blending floral scents of violet with stone fruit aromas and black berries such as blackberry. Notes of black raspberry, cherry and strawberry intertwine with a subtle mineral touch and an aniseed hint reminiscent of liquorice.

Palate
The attack offers a delicate, elegant texture, supported by remarkably fine tannins. Lovely acidity brings tension and freshness, giving the wine a sense of fullness. The mid-palate opens up on fruit, leading to a persistent finish marked by returning notes of violet, blackberry and a delicate saline touch.

Food and wine pairing

This cuvée pairs wonderfully with eggplant fritters, samosas or couscous. It also goes very well with poultry, small game, charcuterie, Mediterranean dishes based on tomatoes and herbs, as well as hard cheeses.

Service and storage

To fully appreciate the Javernières 2023, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 14 and 16°C, taking care to decant it for thirty minutes to an hour during its early years. This wine can continue to age in the cellar and will develop favourably to be enjoyed until around 2041.

The authentic expression of Morgon terroir by Domaine Louis Claude Desvignes

The estate

Founded in 1712, Domaine Louis Claude Desvignes is a historic figure of Beaujolais. This vineyard of around 14 hectares is now run by the eighth generation, embodied by siblings Claude-Emmanuelle and Louis-Benoît Desvignes. Fervent advocates of environmentally friendly viticulture, they carry on the family legacy by favouring the pure expression of the terroirs and minimal-intervention winemaking. The estate is indeed certified organic, confirming its commitment to sustainable practices and the production of authentic wines.

The vineyard

Located within the Morgon appellation, the Javernières plot spans approximately two hectares. Positioned on the south-eastern flank of the famous Py hill, the vines, averaging forty years of age, benefit from a gentle slope offering optimal sunlight exposure. The terroir is distinguished by deep soils, particularly rich in clay and infused with iron oxide, which gives the earth its characteristic reddish colouring and lends a distinctive minerality to the grapes, harvested exclusively by hand.

The vintage

The year began with a mild winter, followed by a cooler, rainier spring. Flowering took place under ideal conditions, ensuring a good bunch set. July and August were marked by alternating warm spells and rainfall, thereby avoiding water stress and excessive sugar accumulation. These mild climatic conditions allowed for a slow, gradual ripening through to harvest, preserving lovely freshness and optimal acidity.

Winemaking and aging

The Javernières 2023 cuvée undergoes traditional, plot-by-plot vinification. After partial destemming, fermentation begins using indigenous yeasts. Maceration lasts around ten days, punctuated by délestages, pumping-overs and aerations for controlled extraction. After pressing and an initial settling, the wine is aged exclusively in concrete tanks on fine lees for close to nine months, without any racking, before undergoing light filtration ahead of bottling.
