The authentic expression of a great Burgundy terroir by Domaine Pierre Morey

The estate

Officially founded in 1971 by Pierre Morey, Domaine Pierre Morey is an essential reference in Burgundy. Although the family's history in the region dates back to the sixteenth century, it was under Pierre's guidance that this roughly ten-hectare estate truly flourished. A pioneer, the estate converted to biodynamic farming very early on, back in the 1990s. Today, Anne Morey runs the domaine with passion, alongside her father as co-manager and her son Jean-Victor. Together, they carry on a demanding philosophy that showcases the pure expression of each terroir.

The vineyard

This wine comes from the famous Madeleine Collignon cuvée of the Hospices de Beaune, produced from the prestigious Mazis-Chambertin terroir. Classified as Grand Cru, this vineyard benefits from an ideal southeast-facing exposure and a continental climate. The plot is located precisely on the Mazis-Hauts slope, characterized by shallow limestone soils. More than two-thirds of these vines were planted in 1947, giving the grapes a unique concentration.

The vintage

The year 2023 stood out for its warm and generous weather. After a particularly dry and sunny summer, an extreme heatwave at the end of August greatly accelerated the ripening cycle of the berries. These climatic conditions called for a swift and precise harvest in order to preserve natural acidity in the face of rapidly rising sugar levels, all while rigorously managing yields.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes for this Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2023 are harvested entirely by hand. Alcoholic fermentation begins naturally through the action of indigenous yeasts within traditional old vaulted cellars. The wine then undergoes careful aging in wood, spanning a period of 12 to 24 months, allowing its structure to refine and its full elegance to emerge.
