The estate
Founded in 1998 by Donatella Cinelli Colombini, this estate is located in Tuscany and showcases a family heritage dating back to 1592. The owner runs two estates: Casato Prime Donne in Montalcino and Fattoria del Colle in Trequanda. The first entirely female Italian wine estate, from vineyard to cellar, it perpetuates an exceptional matrilineal legacy. Specializing in Brunello di Montalcino made from sangiovese, the estate combines tradition and modernity. Donatella Cinelli Colombini also founded the Movimento del turismo del vino.
The vineyard
The Brunello di Montalcino comes from vines located in the northeastern area of Montalcino, at 225 meters above sea level. The terroir is composed of marine sand and clay. The vines are farmed organically.
The vintage
The 2021 vintage in Tuscany began with a light frost in April. Summer proved dry and hot, with temperatures exceeding 40°C. September brought favorable conditions thanks to a significant diurnal temperature range, with temperatures hovering around 29°C during the day and 15°C at night. These conditions allowed for optimal ripening of the grapes.
Winemaking and aging
Harvesting for the Casato Prime Donne Brunello di Montalcino 2021 took place by hand from September 20 to October 4, with a double selection of the grapes. Vinification is carried out in open-top, truncated-cone concrete vats, with punch-downs and automatic temperature control. Aging continues for 2 years in 5- to 7-hectoliter French oak casks and in oak barrels. The wine is not filtered.
Grape variety
100% sangiovese.
