Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Champonnets" 2024 Frédéric Esmonin

Tasting notes

Colour
The glass reveals a beautiful ruby red hue.

Nose
The bouquet exudes intense aromas of black fruits such as cherry and blackcurrant, subtly underscored by delicate toasted notes.

Palate
On the palate, this wine stands out for its magnificent balance and its profile that is both fleshy and fruity. It offers lovely acidic tension and a transparent mineral structure, revealing all the elegance of its terroir with a beautiful length.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with hearty meats such as prime rib, braised lamb or game. It also goes very well with rich poultry dishes such as coq au vin, as well as aged cow's milk cheeses like Époisses.

Service and storage

For optimal enjoyment, this wine should be served at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. Decanting is recommended in its youth, particularly during the first three to five years. This wine can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve in the cellar until around 2039.

The elegance and minerality of a Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru

The estate

Located in the heart of Burgundy, the estate was founded in 1988 when Frédéric Esmonin, the current owner, decided to transform the family's négociant business into a wine-growing estate. Supported by his father André, he now manages a vineyard of around 10 hectares. The estate stands out for its artisanal approach, limited production and access to prestigious terroirs. Favouring quality over quantity, Frédéric Esmonin produces wines internationally recognised for their finesse and environmental respect, thanks to sustainable farming practices carried out without herbicides.

The vineyard

The Gevrey-Chambertin vineyard is set on complex soils composed of brown limestone and marl covered with scree and silt. The vines, facing southeast and east, benefit from an ideal exposure and an altitude ranging between 280 and 330 metres, bringing freshness and tension to the grapes. The "Les Champonnets" climat benefits from a cool air current that preserves the fruit's minerality. The estate practices sustainable farming, with regular ploughing, the use of natural composts and the complete elimination of herbicides to support the soil's microbial life.

The vintage

The year 2024 was marked by complex weather conditions. Spring and summer brought a delayed flowering and heavy mildew pressure, followed by summer rains that slowed ripening. Fortunately, a warm and sunny September allowed the berries to reach excellent phenolic maturity. Despite significantly reduced yields, this vintage offers grapes with great aromatic concentration and lovely freshness.

Winemaking and aging

The harvest is carried out by hand by a loyal team, followed by meticulous sorting. Vinification begins with a four- to five-day cold maceration to gently extract the aromas. Pressing is carried out with precision using a membrane press. Aging then takes place in French oak barrels for 14 to 16 months. The wine is bottled after a single racking and without any prior filtration in order to preserve its full structure.

Grape variety
