The estate
Founded in 1992 by Gérard Bertrand, a former international rugby captain turned visionary winemaker, the Gérard Bertrand estate now spans nearly 930 hectares across seventeen properties throughout Languedoc-Roussillon. A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in the south of France, Gérard Bertrand has converted all of his vineyards to these environmentally respectful principles, with 830 hectares certified Demeter. Château L'Hospitalet, acquired in 2002, is the flagship property of the estate, with its 82 hectares of vineyards located in the La Clape massif. Today, Gérard Bertrand leads this wine group, internationally recognized for the excellence of its wines and its environmental commitment.

The vineyard
The vineyard of Château L'Hospitalet "Grand Vin" 2020 is planted on the La Clape massif, a former Mediterranean island that was connected to the mainland in the fourteenth century. Located at around one hundred meters above sea level on the edge of the Mediterranean, the vineyard benefits from a sunny climate tempered by sea breezes. Marl-limestone soils rich in marine fossils, along with Mediterranean red soils over compact limestone, give the wine its distinctive minerality. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically and has been Demeter-certified since the 2017 vintage, in keeping with natural cycles and the surrounding biodiversity of garrigue, truffle oaks, and olive trees.

The vintage
The 2020 vintage in the Languedoc benefited from favorable Mediterranean weather conditions, allowing optimal ripening of the white grapes under the influence of sea breezes from La Clape.

Winemaking and aging
The grapes for Château L'Hospitalet "Grand Vin" 2020 are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness. After rigorous sorting and gentle pressing, fermentation takes place in French oak barrels. The wine is then aged on fine lees with regular bâtonnage, a technique that brings roundness and aromatic complexity while preserving the wine’s freshness.

Grape varieties
Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Vermentino, Viognier.
