A Languedoc white wine from biodynamic farming

The estate

Gérard Bertrand founded the Société des Vins Gérard Bertrand in 1992, while he was still a professional rugby player. A former captain of Stade Français, he took over the family estate in 1987 following the death of his father Georges. Today, Gérard Bertrand runs a wine empire of 930 hectares in the Languedoc and the Roussillon, including 830 hectares certified biodynamic by Demeter, making him the world’s largest biodynamic producer. The estate acquired Château La Sauvageonne in November 2011, furthering its expansion into the exceptional terroirs of southern France. Gérard Bertrand embodies a vision in which viticultural excellence and environmental respect come together in harmony.

The vineyard

Château La Sauvageonne is located in the Terrasses du Larzac appellation, in the north of the Hérault department, in the Languedoc. The vineyard benefits from an exceptional terroir made up of volcanic soils known as "ruffes", characterized by their distinctive red color. These ancient lands, formed from metamorphic schists and basaltic formations, lend the wines remarkable minerality. The estate stretches between 150 and 350 meters in altitude, near Lac du Salagou. The significant diurnal temperature range, with hot days and cool nights, promotes optimal grape ripening. From its acquisition in 2011, Gérard Bertrand began converting the vineyard to biodynamic farming, obtaining Demeter certification starting with the 2015 vintage.

The vintage

The 2013 vintage in the Languedoc benefited from favorable climatic conditions, characterized by generous sunshine and warm temperatures that ensured excellent ripeness in the white grapes. That year’s conditions encouraged the development of concentrated aromas and a fine expression of the terroir.

Winemaking and aging

Château La Sauvageonne "Grand Vin" 2013 was crafted using methods that respect the fruit and the terroir. Aging took place over a period of twelve to sixteen months in French oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop complexity while preserving its aromatic freshness. The biodynamic practices applied in the vineyard continue in the cellar through a non-interventionist approach, letting the wine fully express its origin.
