Decanter

Blackcurrants and milk chocolate with fragranced violets and roses on the nose. Supple and softly plump in the mouth with generous tannins that fill the mouth with juicy red berry fruits before slate, graphite and wet stone minerality come in and straighten out the finish. A lovely combination of elements here – excellent acidity and a real sense of energy and focus with a precise liquorice and cola grip on the finish. Great stuff and this wine comes across very well this year. More Merlot than usual in the blend this year. 35% second wine.

High floral aromatics, vivid and vibrant plum colour, this is a very charming and well constructed wine. The personality of Marquis has changed a little over the past few years in the best way, this is juicy, feels more old school in its tannic structure than exuberant vintages like 2022, with far more vibrant fruit than 2024, closer to 2023 in style here, a huge plus for me. 20% new oak. 3.5 pH. Yield 35 hl/ha. Harvest September 4 to 20.

So much freshness and definition in this bouquet, where notes of licorice, fresh wood and ripe black berries come together in perfect harmony. Slightly suave on the attack, the wine is creamy and driven by powerful tannins. They are perfectly in sync with the tension of the acidic structure, delivering both vitality and precision. A wine of exceptional finesse, like a forerunner setting the pace on an Olympic course, crossing the finish line with a time that outdoes its elder! What glide!

Deep black color. Intense, fruity nose, ripe and subtle, with a hint of fig. The palate is wonderfully juicy, exuberant in its flavors and meltingly smooth. Great, sappy length with intense aromas. Lots of fragrance. Blend: 67% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc. Alcohol: 14.1% - pH: 3.5. Yield: 35 hl/ha.

Description

A delicate and balanced Saint-Estèphe Second Wine

The estate

Calon was the name given to the boat used during the Middle Ages to transport timber between the banks of the Garonne. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Marquis de Ségur, who inherited the estate through his marriage, added his family name to it, thereby giving rise to the name of this 3rd Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Estèphe.

Château Calon-Ségur remained the property of the Capbern-Gasqueton family throughout the entire 19th century, before being acquired in 2012 by Suravenir Assurances, which continues the production of wines with a unique character, imbued with the identity of the appellation.

Château Calon Ségur has also become renowned thanks to the label that adorns the estate's bottles. Since the 18th century, the heart has been the emblem of the estate and pays tribute to this declaration by the Marquis de Ségur: "I make wine at Lafite and at Latour, but my heart belongs to Calon". For nearly three centuries, enthusiasts of Château Calon Ségur have remained devoted to this iconic estate on the left bank of Bordeaux.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Château Calon Ségur covers an area of 55 hectares, of which 48 hectares are under cultivation. Established on a substantial layer of Garonne gravel from the Quaternary period, topped with a thin stratum of clay of lacustrine origin, the vines, with an average age of 21 years, produce a great Saint-Estèphe wine.

The wine

Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is the Second Wine of Château Calon Ségur.

Winemaking and aging

Manual harvest followed by rigorous sorting. Vinification in truncated conical stainless steel vats. Maceration of 18 to 21 days. Micro-oxygenation. Co-inoculation, exogenous yeasts and bacteria in stainless steel vats at 25°C. Aging takes place over a period of 17 months in barrels (of which 20% are new).

Blend

Le Marquis de Calon Ségur 2025 is the result of a blend of Merlot (67%), Cabernet Sauvignon (31%) and Cabernet Franc (2%).
