The estate
Founded in 1877 by Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, the bodega R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is a historic institution located in Haro, in La Rioja Alta. Today, the López de Heredia family remains the current owner and manager of the estate, perpetuating an ancestral expertise. At the helm of a vineyard of approximately 170 hectares, this iconic house has established its reputation worldwide thanks to its unwavering commitment to traditional methods and long ageing periods, producing wines of exceptional longevity.
The vineyard
The grapes come exclusively from the Viña Gravonia vineyard, also known locally as Viña Zaconia. This 24-hectare terroir, farmed organically, is located just a few hundred metres from the winery, on the banks of the Ebro river in the Rioja region. Planted at an altitude ranging between 438 and 489 metres, these vines benefit from an ideal environment to produce grapes of great quality, well suited to long ageing.
The vintage
The 2017 growing season was particularly challenging, marked by difficult weather conditions including heavy rainfall, frost and hail. Nevertheless, meticulous work in the vineyards combined with a very mild August allowed diseases to be kept under control. These efforts resulted in an abundant harvest of fine quality, beginning on 24 September for the white grape varieties of this plot.
Vinification and ageing
The winemaking process of the Vina Gravonia 2017 relies on traditional methods. The wine benefits from a long ageing period of four years in oak barrels, punctuated by two rackings per year. Clarification is carried out naturally with fresh egg whites. Finally, the wine is bottled without any filtration, where it continues to rest peacefully.
