Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for the Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru "Les Saints-Georges" Domaine Louis Jadot 2020
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a deep, brilliant ruby red color with subtle purple highlights characteristic of a young, concentrated Pinot Noir.
Nose
The bouquet reveals beautiful aromatic complexity with notes of black cherry, blackberry and violet. Aromas of undergrowth, mushroom and forest floor add a tertiary dimension, while hints of tobacco and leather emerge with aeration.
Palate
On the palate, this wine offers a medium to full body, with firm, well-textured tannins that provide structure without aggressiveness. The lively acidity brings freshness and momentum, while black fruit flavors (cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant) dominate, accompanied by notes of black licorice, clove and subtle oak. The finish lingers with persistence, evolving toward mineral and savory characteristics that reflect the limestone influence of the terroir.
Food and wine pairings
This Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru "Les Saints-Georges" 2020 pairs perfectly with roasted or braised red meats such as lamb, beef or game. It magnificently accompanies a venison stew, pheasant with morel mushrooms or bœuf bourguignon. Soft, washed-rind Burgundian cheeses such as Époisses or Langres also make excellent pairings. Preparations featuring wild mushrooms, particularly porcini or chanterelles, create a beautiful harmony with the wine's earthy notes.
Serving and storage
This Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru "Les Saints-Georges" 2020 can be enjoyed now while possessing significant aging potential. It is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. Decanting for one hour will allow the wine to open fully and reveal its full aromatic complexity.
An elegant and profound Burgundy premier cru by Louis Jadot
The estate
Founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, Maison Louis Jadot ranks among the most respected producers in Burgundy. Based in Beaune, it now controls approximately 270 hectares of vines spread across the entire Burgundy region, including the Côte d'Or, Beaujolais and Mâconnais. Since 1984, the Maison has been owned by Kobrand Corporation while maintaining family-led management under Thibault Gagey as managing director, with Thomas Seiter appointed as president in 2023. Technical direction has been entrusted to Frédéric Barnier since 2010. In 2024, the estate obtained organic certification for all of its own vineyards, crowning more than twenty years of environmental commitment. Louis Jadot embodies a winemaking philosophy that respects the terroir, favoring the authentic expression of Burgundy's climats.
The vineyard
The Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation extends across the communes of Nuits-Saint-Georges and Premeaux-Prissey, in the Côte de Nuits between Dijon and Beaune. The climat Les Saint-Georges, which gave its name to the appellation in 1862, occupies a privileged position on the hillside between Premeaux and Nuits-Saint-Georges, with an ideal eastern exposure. The soils consist of limestone scree from the erosion of the upper plateau, mixed with marly-limestone formations that give the wine its characteristic mineral depth. This premier cru benefits from a temperate oceanic climate with a slight continental tendency. Les Saint-Georges is currently the subject of a reclassification request to grand cru status, attesting to the exceptional quality of this terroir.
The vintage
The 2020 vintage stands out as one of the earliest harvests ever recorded in Burgundy, with picking beginning as early as August. The year was marked by unusual weather conditions, notably a summer drought accompanied by a hailstorm that reduced yields. Despite these challenges, the thermal concentration and intense sunshine produced highly colored, aromatic Pinot Noir grapes with excellent polyphenol content. The tannins proved firm while natural acidity was preserved, ensuring excellent aging potential. This early harvest yielded generous, well-balanced fruit characterized by summer fruit aromas and remarkable structure.
Winemaking and aging
The Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru "Les Saints-Georges" Domaine Louis Jadot 2020 is crafted according to the Maison's minimal-intervention winemaking philosophy. The grapes are vinified plot by plot using indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled vats, with manual pumping over. Total maceration lasts twenty-two to twenty-five days depending on the lots. After the first racking, the wine is transferred to barrels for malolactic fermentation. Aging takes place in 228-liter French oak barrels, with a moderate proportion of new wood to preserve the expression of the terroir. The Maison owns its own cooperage, Cadus, created in partnership with Tonnellerie Vicard in 1996, ensuring complete control over the quality and specifications of the barrels used.
