The elegance and finesse of a red wine from Volnay by Louis Latour
The estate
Founded in 1797, the House of Louis Latour is a true institution in Burgundy. Family-owned and independent for nearly 230 years, it is now led by Florent Latour, representing the eleventh generation. The estate spans 48 hectares, an exceptional proportion of which—27 hectares—is classified as Grand Cru, making the estate the largest holder of these prestigious terroirs in the region. Based in Aloxe-Corton, the House also stands out for owning its own cooperage, a rarity that ensures perfect mastery of the ageing of its wines.
The vineyard
The grapes for this wine come from plots located within the Volnay appellation, cultivated according to certified sustainable practices. The vines, averaging around thirty years of age, thrive at an altitude ranging between 230 and 370 metres. They benefit from a favourable east and south-east exposure. The terroir is composed of clay-limestone soils, which give the grapes their elegant, mineral profile.
The vintage
The year proved particularly challenging from a weather perspective. Spring and early summer, marked by high humidity, led to a difficult and uneven flowering. Fortunately, a dry, sunny spell settled in from late July through August, allowing the grapes to ripen. After some rain in late August, the return of cool, dry weather in September provided ideal conditions for a quality harvest, although yields were significantly reduced.
Winemaking and ageing
Hand-harvesting allows for a rigorous selection of the fruit. The winemaking of Volnay Village 2024 follows a traditional process in open vats, using exclusively indigenous yeasts and a short maceration to preserve the delicacy of the fruit. The wine is then aged for 10 to 12 months in French oak barrels crafted by the estate's own cooperage, with a moderate proportion of 15% new wood so as not to mask the expression of the terroir.
