Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for L'Ermite 2025 by M. Chapoutier

Tasting

Appearance
An intensely deep, almost inky black color, shot through with purple highlights that emphasize its depth and concentration.

Nose
Precise, focused, and remarkably pure. It quickly gains in complexity, combining mineral notes of warm stones with a floral register (violet, peony), followed by delicate vegetal hints (bramble leaf) and black fruit in coulis form (blueberry). A subtle menthol freshness completes the ensemble.

Palate
The attack is ample and immediately harmonious. The texture unfolds with a silky feel and a refined, noble character. The tannins, tight yet perfectly integrated, display great elegance and carry the palate effortlessly. The finish, both sensual and slightly rustic in profile, reveals notes of peony and fern, then opens onto nuances of orange blossom, black olive, and violet, with a refined persistence.

A silky and concentrated great red wine from Ermitage

The estate

Founded in 1808 in Tain-l’Hermitage, the Maison M. Chapoutier is one of the leading references of the Rhône Valley. Since 1990, Michel Chapoutier has driven its momentum, now joined by his children Mathilde and Maxime. The estate spans 483 hectares. A pioneer of biodynamics as early as 1991 and an initiator of single-plot selections, it stands out for its uncompromising pursuit of the most faithful expression of terroir. Another emblematic commitment: the house was the first in the world to include Braille on all its labels, as early as 1995, demonstrating a strong dedication to inclusion.

The vineyard

Perched at the summit of the legendary Hermitage hill, the lieu-dit "L’Ermite" stretches around the Saint-Christophe chapel. East-facing and benefiting from afternoon sun, this singular terroir rests on very poor soils composed of decomposed white granite and loess. The vines, aged between 80 and 120 years, are cultivated according to the strict principles of biodynamics. Harvesting is carried out by hand in several passes to ensure grapes of perfect physiological ripeness.

The vintage

A vintage beginning with a rather mild and very rainy winter, building up good water reserves, followed by a prolonged cold period that delayed budbreak and reduced the risk of frost. The spring, alternating rain and sunshine, led to strong vegetative growth and increased pressure on the vines, with early flowering but few bunches. The summer was marked by two heatwaves and a hail episode in Crozes-Hermitage, causing some losses. Harvests, starting early from mid-August, were spread out thanks to late-August rains that refined ripeness levels

Winemaking and aging

For this cuvée, macerations are deliberately limited to around three weeks, and fermentation temperatures are reduced to preserve aromatic brightness and the finesse of the tannins. This Ermitage is first aged in concrete vats, then continues its maturation for 18 to 20 months in new and one-wine French oak barrels.

Grape variety

L’Ermite 2025 by M. Chapoutier is made from 100% Syrah.
