Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for the Riesling "Lieu-dit Berg" Domaine Schieferkopf 2024 by M. Chapoutier

Tasting

Appearance
The wine displays a beautiful golden hue enhanced by delicate green-tinged highlights.

Nose
With great finesse, the aromatic bouquet opens with notes of mirabelle plum and refreshing citrus fruits such as grapefruit and mandarin. Subtle hints of celery and menthol further enhance the ensemble.

Palate
The palate stands out for its liveliness and slender profile, driven by a clean, structuring acidity. A delicate saline bitterness intertwines with pronounced minerality, offering a crystalline texture. The finish is taut and remarkably precise.

Serving and cellaring

To fully appreciate this Alsace wine, it is recommended to serve it between 8 and 10°C. This wine can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2034.

Food and wine pairings

This dry white wine pairs beautifully with a seafood platter, oysters, or fish prepared with a light herb sauce. It also complements Asian cuisine perfectly, such as sushi or pad thai, as well as regional specialties like choucroute garnie or tarte flambée. Finally, hard cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère will further enhance the tasting experience.

The mineral expression of a blue schist terroir in Alsace

The estate

Founded in 1808 in the Rhône Valley, the Maison M. Chapoutier is a historic figure in French viticulture. Under the leadership of Michel Chapoutier, the current owner joined by his children Mathilde and Maxime, the estate took a decisive turn by converting all its vineyards to biodynamic farming as early as the 1990s. Driven by a desire to explore new terroirs, the family established itself in Alsace with the acquisition of Domaine Schieferkopf, illustrating its ongoing quest for the authentic expression of soils through wines of character.

The vineyard

Located in Alsace, the vineyard thrives at an altitude of 380 meters on particularly steep slopes, sometimes reaching a gradient of 30%. The vines benefit from ideal south and southeast exposures for optimal grape ripening. The uniqueness of this terroir lies in its exceptional subsoil, composed of the region’s only vein of blue schist dating back to the Precambrian era. This ancient, well-draining soil, cultivated with the utmost respect for the environment, gives the grapes a unique mineral identity.

The vintage

The year benefited from moderate climatic conditions, promoting a balanced growing cycle and slow grape maturation, conducive to the development of beautiful aromatic complexity.

Winemaking and aging

The harvest of Riesling "Lieu-dit Berg" Domaine Schieferkopf 2024 is carried out manually using small crates. In the cellar, the grapes undergo a long pressing followed by cold static settling. Alcoholic fermentation starts naturally thanks to indigenous yeasts, followed by a complete malolactic fermentation. Finally, the wine is aged for fifteen months in traditional oak foudres, thus preserving the full purity of its aromas.
