Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for the Geisberg Grand Cru 2016 from Maison Trimbach

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a brilliant pale yellow color with intense green highlights, characteristic of the finest dry Rieslings from Alsace. The clarity and luminosity of the wine reflect the purity of its winemaking.

Nose

The bouquet reveals an aromatic complexity where stone fruits and citrus intertwine. Notes of ripe apricots, peaches and lemon blend with pronounced mineral touches evoking flint and chalk. Floral nuances of white flowers harmoniously complete this airy and inviting nose.

Palate

The attack is soft and refreshing, immediately revealing the wine's balance and precision. The mineral and citrusy structure provides tension and focus, while ripe stone fruits lend a juicy, full texture. The remarkable freshness persists from the attack through to the long, saline finish, punctuated by mineral notes and a touch of licorice.

Food and wine pairing

This Geisberg Grand Cru 2016 pairs magnificently with fine fish, refined seafood and caviar. It also pairs elegantly with delicate white meats prepared with subtle sauces, as well as gourmet dishes showcasing truffles or foie gras.

Serving and storage

The Geisberg Grand Cru 2016 is best enjoyed at a temperature of 12°C. This wine can be appreciated until around 2033, with an optimal drinking window extending to that date. Under ideal storage conditions, its aging potential could extend beyond 2040.

A mineral and precise Alsace Grand Cru Riesling from the terroir of Ribeauvillé

The estate

Founded in 1626 in Riquewihr, Maison Trimbach embodies thirteen generations of Alsatian winemaking expertise. Based in Ribeauvillé since 1920, the estate cultivates approximately 60 hectares of its own vineyards out of a total of 140 hectares. Now led by Jean Trimbach and his family, with the thirteenth generation represented by Anne, Frédérique, Pauline and Julien Trimbach, the Maison remains an international benchmark for dry Alsatian Rieslings. Certified organic since 2023, it upholds a philosophy founded on three words: balance, balance and balance.

The vineyard

Geisberg is one of the smallest Grands Crus in Alsace, with only 8.5 hectares. Located on the geological fault line of Ribeauvillé, this exceptional terroir features limestone and sandstone soils dominated by Muschelkalk. The southern exposure and steep slopes arranged in small terraces promote optimal ripening. These calcareous soils give the Riesling exceptional minerality, great intensity and beautiful energy with finesse. Maison Trimbach owns 2.66 hectares within this Alsace Grand Cru, acquired in 2009.

The vintage

The 2016 vintage is characterized by climatic conditions that produced grapes of excellent maturity with a remarkable natural balance between sugars and acidity. This year gave rise to softer, fruitier wines, with sliced pear characteristics accompanied by subtle notes of pastry dough and minerality.

Winemaking and aging

After hand-harvesting and rapid transport to the winery, the grapes from the Geisberg Grand Cru 2016 are gently pressed using pneumatic pressure. Settling takes place before fermentation. Winemaking is carried out in neutral stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts, without malolactic fermentation. Bottling occurs in the spring following the harvest. The wine then benefits from extended bottle aging in the estate's cellars before release.
