Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Autour de Jonquières 2022 Mas Jullien

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a deep ruby red hue, almost dark, enhanced by delicate violet nuances at the rim.

Nose
The nose gradually opens onto great complexity. It exhales aromas of Mediterranean garrigue, thyme and bay leaf, intertwined with black fruits such as plum and blackberry. With aeration, notes of black pepper, aniseed and subtle mineral touches of graphite emerge.

Palate
On the palate, this wine combines power and finesse with remarkable freshness. The tannins are wonderfully delicate, offering a velvety texture. The black fruit aromas blend with notes of spice and leather, supported by lovely acidity. The finish is exceptionally long, marked by saline minerality and nuances of liquorice.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs beautifully with characterful meats such as lamb, duck or fine cuts of beef. It also goes very well with herb-infused Mediterranean cuisine, wild mushroom dishes, or rich-fleshed fish such as tuna or swordfish.

Service and storage

To fully appreciate the Autour de Jonquières 2022 cuvée in its youth, decanting is recommended before serving to dissipate slight reductive notes. This wine, built for aging, can be cellared and will continue to develop beautifully until around 2042.

The mineral and complex expression of Languedoc terroir

The estate

Founded in 1985 by Olivier Jullien, then just twenty years old, Mas Jullien is a pioneering estate located in Languedoc, France. A true driving force behind the region's qualitative renewal, the estate now spans approximately eighteen hectares. Still at the helm of the domaine, Olivier Jullien cultivates a philosophy deeply respectful of the environment, not hesitating to uproot certain plots in order to replant wooded areas and encourage biodiversity. Mas Jullien is thus renowned for producing wines of great complexity that faithfully reflect the identity of their terroir.

The vineyard

Located around forty kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea, the vineyard flourishes within the Terrasses du Larzac appellation, around the village of Jonquières. The vines, planted up to nine hundred metres in altitude, benefit from an exceptional geological mosaic made up of limestone scree, marl, sandstone and schist. Yields are deliberately limited and cultivation draws on biodynamic principles, with natural cover crops and the use of compost, encouraging deep root growth to withstand the arid climate.

Winemaking and aging

For the Autour de Jonquières 2022 cuvée, the grapes are fully destemmed then carefully sorted. Fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts in large vats, accompanied by gentle manual punching down for delicate extraction. Aging spans approximately three years: a first year in demi-muids, followed by two years in large oak foudres allowing for subtle micro-oxygenation. The wine then rests for several months in bottle in the estate's cellars before release.

Grape varieties

This blend is composed of Mourvèdre (40%), Carignan (30 to 40%), Syrah (20 to 25%) and a tiny proportion of Grenache.
