Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Barolo "Conca" 2022 by Mauro Molino
Tasting notes
Appearance
This Italian red wine displays a beautiful medium-red hue with ruby reflections, brilliantly clear and remarkably pure.
Nose
Showing lovely complexity, the aromatic bouquet first reveals scents of fresh red fruits such as wild strawberry, candied cherry and apricot, intertwined with delicate floral hints of rose. With aeration, mineral notes emerge, along with aromatic herbs like lavender and rosemary, sweet spices and subtle balsamic nuances.
Palate
The attack is lively and bright, carried by lovely acidity. The mid-palate unfolds layered flavours of cherry, strawberry and citrus, supported by noble, fine and perfectly integrated tannins. The finish lingers at length on notes of cedar and fresh herbs.
Food and wine pairings
This wine pairs beautifully with savoury dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, delicately prepared red meats or feathered game. It also accompanies very well dishes rich in umami, such as polenta with aged Parmesan, dishes featuring dried porcini mushrooms or preparations based on slow-simmered tomato sauces.
Serving and cellaring
Endowed with remarkable ageing potential, this 2022 vintage can rest in the cellar to be enjoyed from 2026 and will evolve magnificently until around 2040.
A red wine from Piedmont combining refinement and complexity
The estate
Founded in 1953 by Giuseppe Molino, the agricultural estate truly turned towards excellence in winegrowing under the impetus of his son Mauro Molino from 1979 onwards. Located in Piedmont, in the heart of the commune of La Morra, the estate today extends over approximately 18 hectares of vines. Now run by the second generation, Matteo and Martina Molino, the property stands out for its deep commitment to environmental sustainability and its determination to produce wines that authentically and elegantly express the richness of their original terroirs.
The vineyard
The historic Conca plot, one of the most prestigious of the Barolo appellation, is distinguished by its unique amphitheatre shape. Facing south and south-east, the vines, planted in 1971, thrive at around 250 metres of altitude on complex soils composed of clay and limestone. The vineyard is managed according to sustainable practices, favouring natural grass cover, organic fertilisers and biodiversity-friendly management.
The vintage
The 2022 year was marked by an early and prolonged drought. To adapt to this water stress, the vine naturally reduced its foliage, thereby concentrating its energy on the fruit. These climatic conditions gave rise to berries with thick skins, offering satisfying ripeness and harmonious balance.
Winemaking and ageing
The harvest takes place from early to mid-October. After meticulous sorting and destemming, the grapes macerate for around ten days. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation. Ageing then continues for 24 months in French oak barrels, comprising 10% new casks and 90% used casks, in order to preserve the brightness of the fruit.
Grape variety
Nebbiolo (100%).
