Description

Tasting Characteristics and Advice for the Furmint Dry "Petracs" Single Vineyard 2021 by Oremus

Tasting

Appearance

The wine shows a pale lemon-yellow hue, crystalline and bright.

Nose

The nose displays remarkable elegance with aromas of white peach, green herbs, and citrus fruit. Notes of lemon juice, zest, and peel mingle with hints of star fruit and crushed stone, underscored by a pronounced mineral expression.

Palate

The palate is broad and powerful, with great tension. It reveals a crystalline, spicy minerality, supported by remarkable saline concentration. The acidity provides structure and extends the finish with notes of apricot, citrus, and bitter orange marmalade. The perfect integration of oak with the mineral notes gives this wine exceptional depth and length.

Food and Wine Pairing

This wine is an ideal match for seafood, especially oysters and crab, as well as poultry. It also pairs beautifully with Asian cuisine, particularly Chinese, Korean, Burmese, and Thai dishes combining sweet, sour, and spicy flavors. Miso-, sesame-, and kombu seaweed-based preparations find perfect harmony with its saline minerality. Foie gras is also an excellent pairing.

Serving and Cellaring

The Furmint Dry "Petracs" Single Vineyard 2021 is best enjoyed at a temperature between 10 and 12°C. While already enjoyable to drink now, this wine has cellaring potential through to around 2036 if stored in optimal conditions (12-14°C and 60% relative humidity).

The Estate

Founded in 1993 by the Álvarez family, owners of the prestigious Spanish estate Vega Sicilia, Oremus embodies the rebirth of the Tokaj vineyard after the fall of communism. Under the leadership of András Bacsó for nearly thirty years, and then Róbert Kindl since 2021, the estate spans 100 hectares across forty plots in the Tokaj-Hegyalja region. Oremus has established itself as a pioneer in producing high-quality dry white wines, while honoring the ancestral traditions of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed region. The estate combines family investment, sustainable practices, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence.

The Vineyard

The Petracs vineyard, which gives this wine its name, covers four hectares in the village of Tolcsva, in the geographic heart of the Tokaj region. Located at around 200 meters above sea level, this historic cru was classified as a first growth in the 18th century and is named after Baron Ernest von Petrasch, who received it in 1762. The volcanic soil, composed of andesite, rhyolite, and quartz, gives the wine its exceptional minerality. The steep slope requires entirely manual and horse-drawn cultivation. The vines, averaging sixty years of age, are trained in bush vines at a density of 7,000 vines per hectare.

The Vintage

The year 2021 was marked by a winter with average temperatures and rainfall, with no frost damage. Spring proved particularly challenging—windy, rainy, and cold—with temperatures 3°C below average, delaying budbreak by two weeks. Summer remained mild, without excessive heat or significant rainfall during flowering, which proceeded quickly but one week behind schedule. August brought cool temperatures with average precipitation. September, the harvest period, benefited from dry and notably cool conditions, encouraging optimal ripening with exceptional concentration and high natural acidity.

Winemaking and Aging

The grapes for the Furmint Dry "Petracs" Single Vineyard 2021 are harvested by hand, then gently pressed before being transferred to barrels. Fermentation takes place in French and Hungarian oak barrels. The wine is then aged for five months in barrels with weekly bâtonnage, followed by four months of rest without intervention. In August, the wine is racked into wooden and stainless-steel vats, where it continues to mature for a further six months until bottling in February, around nine months after harvest.
