Wine Spectator

MaryAnn Worobiec

There’s a sense of confidence to this impressive red, with focused notes of blackberry, cassis, black olive and espresso, plus a firm backbone of tannins that makes the flavors more pronounced. A distinctive accent of cast iron joins mineral, sage, wet stone and graphite details, while a hint of smoked paprika leaves a lasting impression, as do the gripping tannins, which never get in the way. Drink now through 2038. 97 cases imported.

Decanter

With its rich swirl of blackberry and black olive, this flagship Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from multiple regions (Coonawarra, Barossa, Padthaway, McLaren Vale) provides lots of savoury pleasure in the mid-palate, but little of the elevated pretty aromas that defined the outstanding 2021 vintage. There’s plenty of drive and persistence through a long palate, finishing politely with fine-grained, elegantly groomed tannins.

Rather seductive aromas of cedar and bark with blackberries, blackcurrants, light milk chocolate and stone. Full-bodied, very round and polished. Tight, focused tannins at the end. Ink and baking spices. Finished fermentation in American oak and aged 18 months. Try after 2027.

Angus Hughson

This benchmark vintage for Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon in 2022 carries both raw power and impressive vibrancy. It ripples with persuasive aromas of blackberry and blackcurrant topped by grated chocolate-mint and a strong oak component. Super power on display in a dense and full-flavored package marked by quite serious tannins that draw out an enormous, immovable finish. A serious wine in every way.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2022 Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, and McLaren Vale. It was aged for 18 months in American oak, 100% new. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes barreling out of the glass with powerful scents of crushed blackcurrants, juicy blackberries, and mulberries, leading to an undercurrent of cedar, crushed rocks, and tapenade with a faint touch of camphor. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is bright and shiny with a firm line of fine-grained tannins and bags of freshness, finishing with great length. According to chief winemaker Peter Gago, 2021 and 2022 in South Australia were as good as it gets for grape-growing. 2022 was relatively cool—cooler than 2021. There were no temperature peaks above 35 degrees Celsius in 2022.
