Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Pommard 1er cru "Les Grands Epenots" 2022 Pierre Girardin
Tasting notes
Colour
The colour reveals a luminous and delicate light ruby red hue, with beautiful transparency.
Nose
With great elegance, the nose opens with floral aromas of peony and notes of fresh cherry. With aeration, subtle herbaceous touches and a delicate mineral salinity emerge.
Palate
The attack is precise and refined, carried by a lovely freshness with citrus accents. The mid-palate offers a beautiful concentration of red fruits (raspberry, cherry, redcurrant) supported by a mineral backbone. The tannins are silky and refined, leading into a long, complex and saline finish.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine will pair wonderfully with grilled or roasted red meats, such as a fine beef rib steak. It will also enhance roasted poultry, feathered game such as duck or pheasant, as well as characterful cheeses like Époisses or a well-aged Comté.
The elegance and minerality of a great Pommard wine
The estate
Representing the thirteenth generation of an illustrious family of winegrowers in Burgundy, Pierre-Vincent Girardin founded his own estate in 2017, at the age of 21. Based in Meursault, the estate now spans approximately 13 hectares. Considered one of the most promising talents of his generation, Pierre Girardin stands out for his minimal-intervention approach, favoring the authentic expression of terroir. The vineyard is cultivated according to the principles of organic farming and biodynamics, where every intervention is meticulously guided by the lunar calendar.
The vineyard
Located in the northern part of the Pommard appellation, the famous Climat of Les Grands Epenots rests on well-drained clay-limestone soils, rich in minerals. Facing south and southeast, at an altitude of between 240 and 380 meters, the vines benefit from optimal sunlight exposure. The estate's plots, made up of very long rows of about 400 meters, are home to old vines around fifty years of age. Their deep roots draw out the quintessence of this limestone terroir, yielding grapes of remarkable concentration.
The vintage
The year 2022 benefited from particularly favorable weather conditions in France. A very sunny spring and summer encouraged ideal vegetative development, without water stress or excessive heat. These optimal conditions allowed grapes to be harvested, during the first two weeks of September, in impeccable health, combining perfect physiological ripeness with beautiful balance.
Winemaking and aging
The making of this Pommard 1er cru "Les Grands Epenots" 2022 begins with hand-harvesting and rigorous sorting. Vinification is carried out 100% with whole clusters, following a philosophy of gentle infusion rather than extraction. Fermentation takes place at low temperature (16 to 17°C) over about ten days, with light pump-overs and no punching down. The wine is then aged for twelve months in French oak barrels (30 to 50% new oak), before resting in stainless steel tanks for four to eight months. Bottling, unfined and unfiltered, is guided by the lunar cycles.
