Tasting
Color
The color reveals a deep ruby-red hue with garnet highlights.
Nose
The nose shows remarkable elegance, with aromas of ripe red fruits such as cherry and raspberry, accompanied by delicate floral notes. The aromatic complexity gradually unfolds, revealing mineral nuances characteristic of the terroir.
Palate
On the palate, this wine expresses a subtle balance between mineral freshness and fruity richness. The structure stands out for its elegance and silky tannins that envelop the palate with finesse. The aromas perceived on the nose carry through harmoniously, while a minerality typical of Vosne-Romanée comes through, reflecting the clay-limestone composition of the soils. The saline, lingering finish highlights the wine’s complexity and its fine acidic structure, which lends freshness and aging potential.
Food and wine pairings
This Vosne-Romanée 1er cru "Les Suchots" 2021 is an ideal match for grilled red meats, Charolais beef, hanger steak with shallots, or pork roast with chestnuts. Its elegant structure and moderate alcohol also allow it to pair well with braised poultry or more delicate game preparations.
Serving and cellaring
It is recommended to serve Vosne-Romanée 1er cru "Les Suchots" 2021 at a temperature between 14 and 18°C. Decanting is not essential, but letting the wine aerate for about 15 minutes in the glass will allow for optimal aromatic expression. This wine can be enjoyed now, but it will continue to evolve through around 2031.
A Vosne-Romanée premier cru combining purity and Burgundian elegance
The estate
The Domaine Pierre Girardin was established in 2016 by Pierre Girardin, son of Vincent Girardin and representative of the family’s 13th generation of winegrowers. Based in Meursault in Burgundy, the estate produced its first vintage in 2017. Today, Pierre Girardin leads the property and farms around 13 hectares of vines spread across prestigious appellations in the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits. His philosophy is rooted in the pursuit of purity and elegance, with minimal intervention in the cellar and the use of custom-made 456-liter barrels to preserve the authentic expression of the terroir without imprinting the wine with oak.
The vineyard
The Vosne-Romanée 1er cru "Les Suchots" comes from an exceptional climat located in the heart of the Vosne-Romanée appellation, ideally positioned between the grand crus Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant and Echézeaux. This privileged setting gives the terroir remarkable geological and climatic features. The clay-limestone soil, typical of the finest terroirs of the Côte de Nuits, offers a perfect balance between drainage and water retention, allowing pinot noir to express all its finesse and aromatic complexity.
The vintage
The year 2021 in Burgundy was marked by contrasting weather conditions. The April frost affected many of the region’s vineyards, reducing yields. The summer that followed was cool and wet, requiring particular care in vineyard management. These conditions gave rise to wines that are fresh, elegant, and easy-drinking, characterized by moderate alcohol levels and fine natural vibrancy.
Vinification and aging
The vinification of Vosne-Romanée 1er cru "Les Suchots" 2021 reflects Pierre Girardin’s philosophy centered on purity and respect for the fruit. The wine underwent 12 months of aging in oak barrels, 30% of which were new, followed by 4 months in stainless-steel tank. This moderate proportion of new oak helps build structure without masking the expression of the terroir. The use of custom-made 456-liter barrels limits the impact of oak on the wine, thus preserving the sought-after aromatic purity and finesse. The wine is neither fined nor filtered before bottling, ensuring the integrity of its texture and complexity.
