Appearance
Coppery topaz hue.

Nose
Lively and highly complex, it evokes old oak, apricot jam, fine liquorice and sweet tart. Gentle notes of baked apple, nutmeg and tropical fruit follow.

Palate
The attack is soft and enveloping. It gives way to dates, light wood smoke, bittersweet molasses caramel and a hint of aromatic leaves. The fruitiness and salinity recall a fine Palo Cortado sherry. The finish is built on supple tannins, subtle spices and molasses. A diffuse minerality prolongs it.

A 73-Year-Old Macallan Scotch Whisky with Notes of Apricot, Liquorice and Tropical Fruit

Macallan, a Benchmark of Speyside Scotch Whisky

Macallan is one of the most emblematic single malt distilleries in Speyside. It was among the first in Scotland to obtain an official distilling licence, in 1824. Founded by Alexander Reid, a farmer specialising in barley, it stretches across the Easter Elchies estate, on the banks of the River Spey. Its technical signature rests on its "curiously small stills", small copper pot stills that contribute to the aromatic concentration of the distillate. Macallan also places major importance on wood: according to the distillery, up to 80% of the final character of its Scotch whiskies comes from the oak casks. The distillery now belongs to the Edrington group.

The Red Collection 73 Years Old, a Macallan Whisky of Great Age

Launched in 2020, The Red Collection brings together rare and distinguished single malts that reflect Macallan's respect for tradition and craftsmanship. Its red colour draws inspiration from the "Choice Old" range, first released in 1903. The collection includes three permanent expressions (40, 50 and 60 years old) and extraordinary editions of 71, 74, 77 and 78 years old, joined by this 73-year-old whisky.

This whisky was filled into cask on 10 November 1950. After 73 years of maturation, it was bottled at its peak of richness and depth. It pays tribute to Macallan's Master Whisky Makers, past and present.

Each bottle's label bears, handwritten, the year of bottling, the bottle number and the "degree of fermentation". It is signed by Euan Kennedy, Master Whisky Maker. The case is crafted from the same European oak, sourced from sustainably managed forests, as Macallan's casks. It is covered in soft, sustainably sourced red leather supplied by the Scottish supplier Bridge of Weir Leather. The bottle rests on an oak base cut from old cask ends that were used to mature the whisky. Some bases retain marks or lettering from their time in the warehouse, making each one unique.
