Description
Characteristics and tasting advice for La Roche 2011 from Thibault Liger-Belair
Tasting
Appearance
The wine shows a beautiful ruby hue characteristic of Gamay, with medium intensity and slightly garnet highlights that reflect the wine’s evolution.
Nose
The nose reveals a complex aromatic profile marked by notes of crisp black fruit and undergrowth. Delicate cherry aromas mingle with hints of violet and a fine mineral expression.
Palate
On the palate, the wine displays a remarkable structure for the appellation, with exceptional density and purity. The palate offers flavors of juicy blackberries and blueberries, complemented by a subtle oaky note. The tannins are present yet silky, providing a fine framework while preserving the characteristic elegance of Gamay. The finish is long and persistent, revealing aromas of fresh black fruits and a complexity reminiscent of an autumn forest.
Food and wine pairings
This wine pairs perfectly with roast poultry, duck breast with dried fruits, coq au vin, or braised dishes such as beef bourguignon. Its structure also allows it to match more elaborate dishes than traditional Beaujolais wines.
An exceptional Moulin-à-Vent aged according to Burgundian principles
The estate
Founded in 2001, Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair carries on a family winemaking tradition dating back to 1720. Based in Nuits-Saint-Georges in the Côte de Nuits, the estate is run by Thibault Liger-Belair, who took over the family property at the age of 26. In 2008, he expanded his work to Beaujolais by acquiring parcels in the Moulin-à-Vent appellation. Certified organic since 2005 and practicing biodynamics since 2004, the estate stands out for its rigorous approach and respect for terroir. Thibault Liger-Belair applies Burgundian principles to crafting his Beaujolais wines, isolating individual terroirs to express their singular character.
The vineyard
The La Roche vineyard lies within the Moulin-à-Vent appellation, on the slopes surrounding the historic windmill that gave the appellation its name. This lieu-dit enjoys an east-facing exposure and sits on decomposed granite soils with a sandy texture, rich in manganese, typical of this site. The presence of quartz and silica, along with fine clays, brings freshness and mineral tension to the wine. Northern winds help keep the vines healthy while concentrating the grapes.
The vintage
The 2011 vintage in Beaujolais began with a cool, humid August, followed by sunny, warm weather at the end of the month, allowing harvest to start in early September. These conditions produced red wines characterized by fruitiness and freshness, with firm yet silky tannic structures offering good aging potential.
Winemaking and aging
Unlike traditional Beaujolais methods, La Roche 2011 is vinified without carbonic maceration. The grapes are mostly destemmed, then undergo an extended maceration of around one month, with gentle daily pump-overs and a few punch-downs. Careful aging takes place in barrels with 20% new oak, allowing the wine to develop complexity while preserving its fruity character and natural elegance.
