The estate
Founded in 1970 by Nicole and Bernard Chave, the family estate was initially dedicated to mixed farming before turning to winegrowing. Located in Mercurol, at the heart of the Rhône Valley, the estate now spans twenty hectares. Since 1996, Yann Chave has joined the venture and currently runs the estate. Under his leadership, a major shift towards quality-focused production has taken place. A committed advocate for the environment, he has converted the entire vineyard to biodynamics, establishing the estate as one of the leading references in the region.
The vineyard
The vineyard of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation makes up the largest part of the estate's land. It spans three distinct geographical areas, offering a beautiful diversity of terroirs. To the north, the vines flourish on stony terraces with granite subsoils, while to the south, the soils are made up of red clay and rolled pebbles. Averaging over twenty-five years of age, the vines are meticulously tended to encourage controlled yields and optimal grape quality.
The vintage
The year 2024 was marked by a particularly demanding growing season. This vintage stands out for weather conditions noticeably cooler than in previous years. These climatic challenges required highly precise vineyard management and rigorous decision-making, particularly regarding harvest timing, in order to ensure full ripeness and impeccable berry health.
Winemaking and aging
The creation of the Crozes-Hermitage "Tradition" 2024 is based on a gentle, minimal-intervention approach. After destemming the bunches, gentle pumping is favoured to preserve the delicacy of the juices. Fermentation temperatures are carefully controlled, maintained between 20 and 28 degrees, to protect the aromatic compounds. Finally, aging takes place in neutral six-hundred-litre oak barrels, allowing the wine to refine itself while retaining the pure expression of its terroir.
