Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for Barbaresco Currà Riserva 2021 Bruno Rocca
Tasting notes
Colour
The colour reveals a luminous ruby hue verging on garnet, with a delicate transparency characteristic of berries harvested at full ripeness.
Nose
The bouquet opens with aromas of small red and black fruits such as wild strawberry, raspberry and redcurrant, harmoniously blended with floral notes of dried rose petal, geranium and violet. With aeration, a mineral, stony dimension emerges, complemented by subtle touches of liquorice, aniseed and gentle spice.
Palate
The restrained attack gives way to a palate of great freshness, carried by a lovely natural acidity. The texture reveals ripe, velvety and perfectly integrated tannins. The remarkably long finish stretches out with mineral notes, a touch of salinity and a delicate bitterness.
Food and wine pairing
This Italian red wine pairs wonderfully with flavourful meats such as grilled lamb or braised veal. It also enhances pasta dishes in sauce, a mushroom or black truffle risotto, as well as aged hard cheeses. For a bolder pairing, it goes perfectly with rich fish such as tuna tartare or braised white fish with olives.
Service and storage
The Barbaresco Currà Riserva 2021 will reveal its full complexity after a few years in the cellar and can be enjoyed until around 2046.
The elegance and mineral complexity of a Barbaresco wine
The estate
The Rocca family's winemaking history in Piedmont dates back to 1834, but it was in 1978 that the Bruno Rocca estate officially came into being when he decided to bottle wine under his own name. Today, Bruno Rocca runs the estate alongside his children, Francesco and Luisa. This estate of around fifteen hectares is recognised for its sustainable approach, eschewing chemical inputs in favour of biodiversity. The house's philosophy is built on low yields and minimal intervention, creating authentic wines.
The vineyard
Acquired in 2001, the Currà vineyard spans four hectares to the southwest of the commune of Neive, within the Barbaresco appellation. Located at an altitude of between 200 and 300 metres, the vines, around thirty years old, thrive on soils composed of limestone, clay and Sant'Agata marl. The estate practises sustainable viticulture here, free from synthetic products, encouraging natural grass cover between the rows to boost biodiversity and enrich the soils.
The vintage
2021 benefited from particularly favourable climatic conditions. The crucial harvest period in October was marked by very low rainfall. Combined with ideal seasonal temperatures and consistent sunshine, this weather allowed the growing cycle to reach a perfect conclusion, yielding berries with optimal ripeness and concentration.
Winemaking and aging
Following manual harvesting and rigorous sorting, the grapes are gently hand-destemmed. Whole-bunch fermentation takes place spontaneously through indigenous yeasts in wooden vats, with an extended maceration period of 25 to 30 days. Malolactic fermentation then takes place in barrels. The Barbaresco Currà Riserva 2021 is aged for between 24 and 26 months in French white oak casks and barrels, air-dried for at least 40 months, with a minimal proportion of new wood in order to preserve the fruit's expression.
