Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Grenache Noir 2023 from Castelmaure
Tasting
Nose
The nose is generous and expressive, unfolding aromas of blackcurrant, juicy blackberry and fresh redcurrant. Notes of sun-soaked crushed strawberry mingle with touches of liquorice with wild accents. The ageing lends a subtle woody imprint, with delicate notes of cocoa and discreet vanilla.
Palate
The palate is full-bodied yet retains a remarkable lightness. The silky, velvety texture caresses the palate with freshness rather than imposing itself. The finish lingers on a mineral, almost saline framework, evoking warm stone and schist.
Food and wine pairing
This Grenache Noir is an ideal match for braised lamb with garrigue herbs. It also pairs well with roast pigeon served in a rich red wine jus, accompanied by a spiced sweet potato purée.
Serving and cellaring
Serve at a temperature between 16 and 18°C. A brief chilling before opening is possible.
A Grenache Noir from schist terroirs
The estate
Founded in 1921, the Castelmaure cooperative winery brings together sixty winegrowers cultivating 440 hectares. Under the oenological direction of Antoine Robert, this cooperative, a pioneer of carbonic maceration applied to Carignan, produces five ranges showcasing Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah. Its model rewards quality rather than volume, guaranteeing authentic wines that are recognised internationally.
The vineyard
This Vin de France comes from hillsides planted on a pure schist terroir. The vines are set at altitude, between 200 and 350 metres, on plots exposed to the influence of the wind, which gives the wine its pronounced minerality.
Vinification and ageing
The grapes for the Grenache Noir 2023 are carefully harvested, then destemmed. Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks with regular pump-overs. At pressing, only the first juices, the purest and most luminous, are retained for this cuvée. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 12 months in foudre.
Grape variety
100% Grenache Noir.
