Tasting notes
Appearance
The colour reveals a deep, intense red hue.
Nose
Complex on the nose, opening with aromas of black fruit and plum. It then develops notes of garrigue and wax, along with subtle hints of coffee and wood.
Palate
With a medium body and an appealing texture, the palate is carried by lovely acidity and firm tannins. The whole offers a serious structure that extends into a long, mineral finish.
Food and wine pairings
This wine pairs perfectly with southern French cuisine. It will beautifully complement grilled red meats, game such as wild boar or venison, or slow-cooked dishes with aromatic herbs.
Serving and cellaring
It is recommended to serve "La Grande Cuvée" 2014 at a temperature of between 14 and 18°C, taking care to aerate or decant it one to two hours before tasting.
The elegance and structure of a great red wine from Corbières
The estate
Founded in 1921, the Castelmaure cooperative winery is a historic institution of the Languedoc. This collective brings together winegrowers around a vineyard of approximately 420 hectares near the village of Embres-et-Castelmaure. Now led by Antoine Robert, the estate stands out for its high standards, favouring exclusively hand-harvested grapes and a production facility combining century-old concrete vats with a contemporary winery. Renowned for its technical boldness, this cooperative embodies the success of a collective model dedicated to the excellence of its terroir.
The vineyard
The vines flourish in the Hautes Corbières, on the Durban terroir, at an altitude of around 300 metres. This wild environment, steeped in the scents of garrigue, thyme and rosemary, rests on a mosaic of soils combining schist, limestone, sandstone and marl. The Mediterranean climate, strongly marked by sun and wind, ensures optimal ripening of the grapes.
Winemaking and ageing
For "La Grande Cuvée" 2014, the grapes are fully destemmed before undergoing traditional vinification in vats, without carbonic maceration. The wine is then aged for 10 to 12 months in 225-litre French oak barrels, around 25% of which are new, to refine its structure.
