Description
The aromatic richness and mineral freshness of a white wine from Corsica
The estate
Officially founded in 1950, Domaine Comte Abbatucci is an emblematic figure of winemaking in France, and in Corsica in particular. Located in the Taravo valley, the estate spans around a hundred hectares, twenty-one of which are dedicated to vines. Now run by Jean-Charles Abbatucci, this highly regarded Corsican estate stands out for its deep commitment to biodynamics and to preserving the island's heritage. A true ampelographic conservatory, it cultivates rare indigenous grape varieties within a rich ecosystem, producing authentic wines.
The vineyard
The grapes for this cuvée come from a historic two-hectare plot planted in the early 1960s. Located at an altitude of around one hundred and fifty meters on granitic sandy soils, this vineyard benefits from a Mediterranean climate tempered by sea breezes. The high-density vines thrive on this poor, well-drained terroir, which naturally limits their vigor. This wine is produced under the Vin de France appellation.
Winemaking and aging
Following manual harvesting, the grapes for Domaine Comte Abbatucci "Diplomate d'Empire" 2023 undergo direct pressing, either as whole bunches or destemmed. The must is then cold-settled for twenty-four to forty-eight hours. Fermentation takes place in used 600-liter French oak demi-muids. The wine is then aged on full lees for nine months, before being blended and continuing its maturation in stainless steel tanks for six to seven months. Stabilization occurs naturally through cold settling, followed by light filtration.
Grape varieties
This wine is a blend of six indigenous grape varieties: Vermentino (approximately 37 to 40%), Rossola Bianca, Bianco Gentile, Genovese, Brustiano, and Barbarossa. These historic island varieties, carefully preserved by the estate, give the wine a unique identity and a distinctive aromatic complexity.
