Decanter

The 'classic' Clos de Bèze from Faiveley is blended from three parcels that total one hectare, all located in the centre of the climat. 'Serious but not severe' I wrote in my notes. The wine has admirable complexity and depth of flavour, with focused blackberry and mulberry fruit, notes of violets and peonies, ginger, star anise, and liquorice spice. There is all the lovely intensity and length of a top wine and enough freshness to keep it lively.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2022 Domaine Faiveley

Tasting

Colour
The colour of this French wine reveals a deep, bright ruby red hue with great clarity.

Nose
Still somewhat reserved in its youth, the bouquet reveals a fine complexity blending black fruit and dark cherry aromas with toasted notes. Subtle spicy touches intertwine with a very precise minerality.

Palate
The palate offers a velvety texture and a structure that is both powerful and refined. The expression of concentrated black fruit is perfectly balanced by a lovely freshness and elegant tannins, leading to a harmonious finish.

Food and Wine Pairing

This wine pairs wonderfully with traditional gastronomy, such as beef bourguignon, roasted meats like lamb or duck, as well as feathered game served with a mushroom sauce. It also elevates washed-rind cheeses such as Époisses.

Service and Storage

With a remarkable ageing potential, this Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2022 can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2052.

Other Characteristics

This vintage stands out for its relatively high pH and moderate alcohol content, ranging between 13% and 13.5%.

The Elegance and Minerality of a Grand Cru from Burgundy

The Estate

Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Faiveley is a true institution in Burgundy. Now run by the seventh generation, embodied by siblings Erwan and Eve Faiveley, the estate oversees a vast vineyard of approximately 120 hectares. Combining respect for ancestral traditions with modern environmental awareness, the estate has achieved organic farming certification. It stands out for its commitment to producing wines that faithfully reflect the uniqueness of each terroir, while actively engaging in the preservation of the region's cultural heritage.

The Vineyard

The historic terroir of Chambertin-Clos de Bèze extends over a gentle east-facing slope, at an altitude ranging between 240 and 280 metres. The vines, carefully selected for their age, flourish on complex soils resting on a bedrock of hard limestone. The upper part of the slope is composed of loam and gravelly scree, while the lower section of the plot features a clay-limestone structure, giving the grapes a unique concentration.

The Vintage

The year 2022 began with a cool spring, followed by optimal flowering in early June. The summer season, marked by heat, encouraged early ripening of the berries. Harvest thus began as early as the end of August, yielding grapes with beautiful ripeness, preserved acidity and remarkable balance.

Winemaking and Aging

The grapes intended for the Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2022 are hand-harvested into small, well-ventilated crates. An extremely rigorous sorting process, both manual and optical, is carried out to retain only perfect berries. Fermentation incorporates a proportion of 20% to 50% whole clusters depending on the specific characteristics of each plot, with moderate extraction aimed at preserving the freshness of the fruit.

Grape Variety

100% Pinot Noir.
