Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2024 Domaine Faiveley

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a deep ruby red hue.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with woody and spicy notes, intimately intertwined with aromas of red fruits such as raspberry and cranberry. Nuances of black cherry and plum, along with subtle touches of violet, rose, smoke and damp earth, further enrich this palette.

Palate
The palate offers a rich, velvety texture, supported by fine, particularly well-integrated tannins. The structure is both firm and elegant, revealing beautiful fruit density that lingers persistently into a long finish.

Food and Wine Pairing

This red wine pairs perfectly with feathered game such as pheasant or duck, particularly when prepared with a wine-based sauce. It also goes wonderfully with roast lamb, glazed poultry or a fine cut of beef. At the end of a meal, it pairs beautifully with soft, washed-rind cheeses such as Époisses.

Service and Storage

To fully appreciate this Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2024, serving between 15 and 17°C is recommended. Decanting for 30 to 60 minutes before tasting may be considered to soften its youthfulness, although its shortened ageing could make it more readily accessible sooner. This wine, built for ageing, can be laid down in the cellar and enjoyed from around 2030 to 2045.

The Purity and Concentration of a Grand Cru from Gevrey-Chambertin

The Estate

Founded in 1825 by Pierre Faiveley in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Faiveley is a historic figure of Burgundy. Now led by the seventh generation, embodied by Erwan and Eve Faiveley, the estate spans approximately 120 to 130 hectares across several appellations. This vast vineyard, managed with an environmentally respectful philosophy, achieved organic farming certification for the 2025 vintage. The estate is distinguished by its commitment to the authentic expression of its terroirs and its expertise combining tradition with technical precision.

The Vineyard

Mazis-Chambertin is the northernmost Grand Cru of the commune of Gevrey-Chambertin. The estate's plot, spanning 1.55 to 1.56 hectares, is located on the upper part of the appellation, benefiting from an east-facing exposure. The vines, planted between 1945 and 2020, thrive on shallow soils composed of Premeaux limestone, scree and alluvial deposits, with a very low proportion of clay.

The Vintage

The year 2024 was marked by particularly challenging weather conditions. Abundant rainfall, including 27 days of rain in June, led to significant fungal disease pressure. The flowering period suffered major disruptions, causing coulure and millerandage. These climatic events resulted in historically low yields, but allowed for small berries with high phenolic maturity.

Winemaking and Aging

The grapes are harvested by hand, followed by rigorous sorting. Alcoholic fermentation extends over approximately nineteen days with daily punching down (pigeage). For this Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2024, due to the high concentration of the juice resulting from very low yields, Erwan Faiveley chose to shorten the ageing process. The wine was bottled without extended ageing in oak barrels in order to preserve its balance and avoid excessive oak influence.
