Vinous

Nicolas Greinacher

Earthy and spicy tones, griotte cherry and silhouettes of violets introduce the 2023 La Rosine, a medium-bodied and smoothly wrought Syrah grown right outside the border of the Côte-Rôtie appellation. Totally savory, the 2023 levels off with softly radiant spiciness on the refined finish.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Tips for La Rosine 2023 from Domaine Stéphane Ogier

Tasting

Colour

The colour is a deep ruby to garnet, with violet highlights and good intensity, reflecting a well-controlled ripeness of the grapes.

Nose

The nose opens with earthy, spicy notes before unveiling morello cherry and blackcurrant fruit, accompanied by floral nuances of violet. Touches of black olive and tapenade complete the palette, supported by sweet spices and a hint of pepper, in an authentic and slightly wild register typical of Syrah grown on granite.

Palate

The palate reveals a medium body, carried by a fluid texture and fine tannins, smoothed by ageing. The delicate, deliberately lightly extracted substance gives way to lovely aromatic freshness, underpinned by a mineral and spicy framework that adds definition to the whole. The savoury, slightly saline finish extends the spicy notes with a respectable persistence for this appellation.

Food and Wine Pairing

La Rosine 2023 will pair ideally with a wild boar daube or braised beef and veal, where its fine tannins support the texture without overwhelming it. It also works very well with a rack of lamb roasted with herbs, regional charcuterie such as country terrines, or grilled meats such as a beef rib steak or a duck breast. Mediterranean dishes, enlivened with olives and herbes de Provence, also find a fine echo in this wine.

Serving and Cellaring

We recommend serving La Rosine 2023 at around 15-16°C, ideally decanting it in its early years to encourage its aromatic expression.

A Syrah from the Collines Rhodaniennes on the Edge of Côte-Rôtie

The Estate

The Domaine Stéphane Ogier, located in Ampuis in the Rhône Valley, traces its origins to the first wines bottled by Michel Ogier in the early 1980s, after several generations of family vine growing. Stéphane Ogier, trained in Burgundy, joined the estate in 1997 and gradually took over its management, imprinting it with a signature marked by precision and elegance. The estate changed its name in 2015 to become Domaine Stéphane Ogier, now run by Stéphane himself and renowned for its cuvées of Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph and Collines Rhodaniennes.

The Vineyard

The vines used for La Rosine are planted on the slopes of Tupin-Semons, just outside the Côte-Rôtie appellation, on granitic soils typical of the Northern Rhône, within the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes. Planting density is high, between 9,000 and 10,000 vines per hectare, and the vines are between twenty and thirty years old, with controlled yields of around 45 hectolitres per hectare.

Winemaking and Ageing

The grapes for La Rosine 2023 are harvested by hand, with sorting carried out in the vineyard and then on a sorting table. Destemming is carried out at 80 to 100%, and fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts over 18 to 21 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for around 12 months in 228-litre French oak barrels that have previously held Côte-Rôtie wines, with no new oak, in order to preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir.

Grape Variety

La Rosine 2023 is made from Syrah, the emblematic grape variety of the Northern Rhône.
