The elegance and minerality of a wine from Victoria
The estate
Founded in 1808, the Maison M. Chapoutier is a leading wine institution in the Rhône Valley. Under the leadership of Michel Chapoutier from 1989 onward, the estate adopted biodynamics and parcel selection. Today, Mathilde and Maxime Chapoutier continue this legacy. The Maison stands out for including braille on its labels since 1996. In 2000, a partnership with the Terlato family gave rise to Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier, extending this expertise to the Victoria region in Australia.
The vineyard
Located in the Pyrenees region at an altitude of 400 meters, the L-shaped plot benefits from full southern exposure. This cool-climate terroir is distinguished by its mineral-rich soils composed of schist and flagstones blending limestone and quartz. These low-yielding vines have shown exceptional resilience, surviving thirteen years of drought without any irrigation, producing grapes of remarkable concentration.
The vintage
The 2024 vintage in Australia began with challenging climatic conditions, marked by flooding and fires in the region. However, from February onward, the weather became ideal. The end of rainfall in late January gave way to a dry and mild summer, followed by a warm and rain-free autumn. These conditions allowed for slow, steady, and optimal ripening of the berries, resulting in a harvest combining generous yields with exceptional quality.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for Domaine Terlato et Chapoutier "L-Block" 2024 are fully destemmed before undergoing fermentation with indigenous yeasts in concrete tanks for approximately two weeks. This is followed by a prolonged maceration of one month with gentle pump-overs to refine the tannins. After pressing at the end of May, the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels.
Grape variety
Domaine Terlato et Chapoutier "L-Block" 2024 by M. Chapoutier is made from 100% Syrah.
