Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for the Cannubi 2019 from Marchesi di Barolo

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays an intense ruby red color, enhanced by pronounced garnet highlights.

Nose

The nose reveals a beautiful aromatic complexity dominated by notes of fresh roses and dried rose petals. As it opens up, the bouquet develops subtle hints of vanilla, oriental spices and a delicate note of absinthe. Nuances of toasted dried fruits and a slight earthy touch complete this refined olfactory expression.

Palate

On the palate, the wine unfolds an ample and generous structure, supported by a refreshing acidity that brings vivacity and persistence. The tannins are elegant, smooth and enveloping. The palate expresses concentrated flavors of black cherry and plum, accompanied by spice notes such as white pepper and cinnamon. The remarkably persistent finish gradually evolves from mineral and spicy sensations toward notes of dried fruits and subtle oak.

Food and wine pairings

This Barolo is an ideal companion for rich red meats, braised preparations such as veal braised in wine, as well as game dishes like wild boar or venison. It also pairs beautifully with traditional Piedmontese pasta such as agnolotti del plin. Mushroom risottos, particularly with porcini or truffle, also make excellent pairings. For cheeses, opt for Piedmontese selections such as Toma, aged Grana Padano or Castelmagno.

Serving and storage

The Cannubi 2019 is best enjoyed at a temperature of 18°C. Decanting for approximately one hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open fully and express its full aromatic complexity. This wine can be enjoyed until around 2030.

An elegant and powerful Barolo from the prestigious Cannubi cru in Piedmont

The estate

Founded in 1929 by Pietro Abbona and his family, Marchesi di Barolo carries on the legacy of the Marchesi Falletti, who created the modern style of Barolo in the early 19th century. Today, the fifth and sixth generations of the Abbona family, represented by Ernesto, Anna, Valentina and Davide, lead this historic estate located in the heart of the village of Barolo in Piedmont. The estate manages approximately 105 hectares of vineyards spread across the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato. Certified SQNPI since 2022, Marchesi di Barolo embodies the excellence of Piedmontese wines by combining centuries-old traditions with sustainable viticultural practices.

The vineyard

Cannubi is the oldest and most prestigious cru in the Barolo appellation, officially recognized since 1752. Situated on an exceptionally steep slope exceeding fifty degrees of inclination, this vineyard benefits from full southern exposure and a microclimate sheltered by the surrounding hills. The soils result from the convergence of two distinct geological formations: fossil marls of Sant'Agata rich in magnesium and manganese carbonates to the west, and Helvetian-era soils to the east. This unique composition, comprising approximately 55% clay, 30% sand and 15% limestone, gives Cannubi wines their elegant character and remarkable aging potential.

The vintage

The 2019 vintage is characterized by balanced maturity and a well-defined structure. The grapes were hand-harvested during the first ten days of October, achieving optimal phenolic maturity while preserving the acidity essential to the structure of Barolo.

Winemaking and aging

After meticulous sorting of the grapes, destemming and pressing are carried out with great care. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature between 24 and 26°C, followed by a maceration of fifteen to eighteen days with regular rack-and-return and pumping over to progressively extract the noble polyphenolic compounds. The Cannubi 2019 then benefited from approximately two years of aging: the first year in French oak barrels, followed by the second year in large Slavonian oak casks. After bottling, the wine was further refined for approximately twelve additional months before release.
