Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for the Barolo Gallinotto 2020 from Mauro Molino

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a medium-intensity ruby red hue, bright and clear.

Nose

The nose reveals an elegant and complex bouquet. Aromas of red and black fruits express themselves with finesse, notably cherry and raspberry. Floral notes of rose and iris bring a delicate and fragrant dimension. The bouquet is complemented by touches of eucalyptus, mint and citrus, along with subtle spicy nuances.

Palate

On the palate, the wine stands out for its elegance and energy. The structure is medium-bodied, with fine, silky and perfectly integrated tannins. The ripe fruit expresses itself generously without excess, supported by vibrant freshness and acidity. Mineral and stony notes reflect the limestone terroir, while touches of tobacco, leather and earth add complexity. The finish is persistent and harmonious.

Food and wine pairings

This Barolo Gallinotto 2020 pairs ideally with braised meats such as beef or veal, as well as roasted or sauce-based pork preparations. It also pairs beautifully with a mushroom risotto or Piedmontese cheeses, as well as duck-based dishes. Truffle preparations find an excellent partner in this wine.

Serving and storage

It is recommended to serve the Barolo Gallinotto 2020 at a temperature of 15 to 18°C. Decanting for 30 to 60 minutes allows the wine to open up and fully express its aromas. This wine can be enjoyed now but has aging potential until approximately 2042.

An elegant and refined Barolo from Piedmont, an expression of the Italian terroir of La Morra

The estate

Founded in 1982 by Mauro Molino, the family estate now spans approximately twenty hectares across the Langhe and Roero regions. Mauro Molino, a trained agronomist and graduate of the Alba Oenological School, developed a philosophy focused on terroir expression and environmental stewardship. Since 2003, his son Matteo has joined the estate to manage production, followed in 2008 by his daughter Martina who oversees commercial operations. The Molino family remains the owner of the estate and continues to practice sustainable viticulture with organic methods, favoring elegance and authenticity in each of their cuvées.

The vineyard

The Gallinotto vineyard is located in the commune of La Morra, within the Barolo DOCG appellation, more precisely in the Berri sector. Planted at high altitude, between 380 and 400 meters, this terroir benefits from a south to southwest exposure. The soils are limestone and clay in nature, giving the wine a distinctive minerality and an elegant structure. The high altitude and cooler climatic conditions allow for a slow and progressive ripening of the Nebbiolo, thus preserving the freshness and acidity characteristic of this site.

The vintage

The 2020 vintage benefited from favorable climatic conditions in the Piedmont region. Winter was relatively mild with sufficient rainfall to replenish water reserves. Spring featured an alternation of warm and cool days, promoting balanced vine growth. Summer proved warm without excess, with some rainfall maintaining vineyard health. Autumn offered excellent harvest conditions, with sunny and dry days and cool nights, allowing optimal grape ripening while preserving their freshness.

Winemaking and aging

After a manual harvest carried out in October, the grapes for the Barolo Gallinotto 2020 were vinified with care. Maceration in contact with the skins lasted approximately ten days, allowing a delicate and refined extraction of tannins. Alcoholic fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the primary aromas. The wine was then aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, split equally between used barriques and large foudres, promoting tannin integration without masking the expression of fruit and terroir.
