Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for La Serra 2021 by Mauro Molino
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a medium-intensity red color with characteristic orange-tinged highlights.
Nose
The bouquet reveals an intensely fragrant profile. It expresses aromas of black cherry, plum, new leather, licorice, incense and sage. Notes of orange peel, clove spice, cranberry, dark resinous herbs and pine complete this complex aromatic palette, which evolves with aeration.
Palate
On the palate, the wine initially presents itself as compact and needs time to fully open up. The structure displays remarkable vertical intensity supported by additional ripeness, spice and textural richness. The tannins provide a substantial framework, both assertive and refined, offering aging potential while maintaining a polished texture. The lively acidity typical of Nebbiolo imparts freshness and vibrancy. The finish lingers at length with persistent, sandy-textured tannins.
Food and wine pairing
This Barolo is an ideal companion for game meats such as venison, beef dishes with rich sauces, as well as truffle-based preparations. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses with a mineral character.
Serving and storage
La Serra 2021 can be cellared until approximately 2047. It is recommended to decant the wine and allow it to open before tasting. The optimal drinking window is between approximately 2029 and 2046.
An elegant and structured Barolo from La Morra by Mauro Molino
The estate
Mauro Molino was founded in 1982 when Mauro, a graduate of the Alba Oenological School, produced his first Barolo following the passing of his father Giuseppe in 1979. Located in the commune of La Morra in the heart of Piedmont, the estate now spans approximately twenty hectares across the Langhe and Roero. Run by Mauro alongside his children Matteo (who joined in 2003) and Martina (in 2008), this independent family estate is renowned for its elegant and aromatic Barolos, its commitment to sustainability and its organic viticulture. The property stands out for its single-plot winemaking, which preserves the expression of each of its Italian terroirs.
The vineyard
The La Serra vineyard is situated in La Morra on a historic high-altitude site, sheltered by the surrounding topography. The soils are composed of calcareous clay. The vines, approximately 55 years old in 2021, bring concentration and complexity to the wine. This plot benefits from a favorable microclimate that allows for steady ripening while preserving the balance between sugar accumulation and acidity retention. La Serra is the last single-plot cru designated by Mauro Molino. This Barolo expresses the elegant and refined characteristics typical of the appellation.
Winemaking and aging
The La Serra 2021 harvest took place in October at optimal phenolic ripeness. The grapes underwent a medium-length maceration of nine days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Alcoholic fermentation lasted twenty days in stainless steel. Malolactic fermentation was carried out in French barrels. Aging continued for eighteen months in French oak barrels, followed by an additional four months in bottle before release.
