Robert Parker

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

The estate's second wine, the sexy 2009 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux, offers lots of black raspberry, cedar and foresty/underbrush notes in its round, generous, full-bodied, seductive embrace of black fruits interwoven with floral notes. This seamless second wine is one of the finest Chateau Margaux has made to date. Enjoy it over the next two decades.

Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Very sleek, with a lovely winey edge to the plum, cassis and blackberry fruit, laced with roasted apple wood, lilac and singed iron notes. Tangy and lengthy, with ample depth, but also nearly approachable now. Best from 2013 through 2023.

Decanter

This is an absolutely killer combination of vibrant, plush red fruits and finely wrought tannins that are still working hard on the silky-smooth palate. With vibrant edging to the colour and a gorgeous, mouthwatering finish, this is a near-perfect Pavillon – ready to enjoy now but will go long. Great stuff, and bodes well for the rest of the vintage in Margaux.

James Suckling

Very ripe for a second wine, this is now delicious thanks to the rich blackberry and cassis fruit, full supple tannins, and a long finish that's simultaneously dry and creamy. Where is that porterhouse steak? Drink or hold. (Horizontal Tasting, London, 2019)

Vinous

Neal Martin

The 2009 Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux has a very pure bouquet with blackberry, raspberry coulis, cedar and light violet aromas, quite intense and graining power in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly powdery tannin. The acidity is very well judged, a completely harmonious Pavillon Rouge with just the right amount of spice to enhance the finish. Excellent. Tasted at BI Wines & Spirits' Ten Year On tasting.

Silky and seductive, from a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, this ripe, fresh wine features supple tannins and a sweet, lush finish filled with blackberry, plum and spice. Enjoy it now, or over the next 10–15 years.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Dark ruby red with purple hues, subtle brightening on the rim. Tobacco and fresh blackberry, subtle notes of nougat, black cherries, a hint of candied orange zest. Juicy, elegant, a refined extracted sweetness, ripe red cherries, a lovely freshness, already very well developed and drinking well, mineral finish.

Weinwisser

67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot. Deep purple. A perfumed bouquet of light red roses, raspberry clusters, and fine ripe Merlot chocolate notes. Sublime on the palate, with delicate tannins and a creamy flow, a silky, focused finish, already perfectly poised. At the presentation of the vintage at Château Margaux, Paul Pontallier spoke of what might be the best Pavillon Rouge he ever had the privilege to accompany. He’s right!

René Gabriel

67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot. Deep purple, dense at the core, with garnet glints at the rim. The bouquet is perfumed with light red roses, raspberry clusters, and at the center even a delicate chocolate note from the ripe Merlots. Sublime on the palate, with gentle tannins and a creamy flow, a silky finish, focused and already perfectly composed. Paul Pontallier said at the vintage presentation that this might be the best Pavillon Rouge he ever had the privilege to accompany at Margaux. He was right!

Bettane+Desseauve

Admirable, subtly floral aroma, inimitable, extreme delicacy within power, a formidable pavilion-red that would have made a perfect great wine only twenty years ago.

Garnet red with violet highlights. An inviting, fruity bouquet with fruit and floral notes. Scents of morello cherries, violets, and chocolate. Creamy attack, plenty of density on the palate, a suave touch. The tannins are well integrated, tempering the wine’s warmth. Persistent finish. A delicious Pavillon Rouge.

92-94 Barrel sample. Very rich, dense, pushing great blackberry fruits and ripe tannins. As always on the level of a classed growth.
