Description
Tasting notes and advice for Roc d'Anglade 2008
Tasting
Color
With its deep garnet hue and violet highlights, this wine shows beautiful concentration.
Nose
After aeration, the nose reveals a complex bouquet combining candied black fruits (blackcurrant, cherry, blackberry), floral notes of violet and iris, along with spicy nuances of white pepper. Hints of Mediterranean garrigue and leather add an extra dimension to the aromatic profile.
Palate
The attack is lively and straightforward, followed by a silky texture mid-palate. Fine, elegant tannins delicately shape the palate, while the saline, mineral finish offers remarkable persistence.
Food and wine pairings
This wine pairs ideally with a butcher’s cut of beef, grilled tournedos, or herb-roasted lamb with Herbes de Provence. It also matches well with feathered game dishes and aged cheeses such as Comté.
Serving and cellaring
Roc d'Anglade 2008 benefits from being decanted one to two hours before serving and served at a temperature of 16 to 18°C. This wine can be enjoyed until around 2028.
A Languedoc wine combining finesse and freshness
The estate
Founded in 1999 by Rémy Pédréno, a former IT engineer trained in the Northern Rhône with René Rostaing, Domaine Roc d'Anglade covers around 9 to 10.5 hectares in the village of Langlade, near Nîmes. Rémy Pédréno now runs the estate with a demanding philosophy that favors finesse and elegance over power. Certified organic since 2011, the estate has established itself as a benchmark of the Gard Languedoc, thanks to distinctive wines that delicately express their native terroir.
The vineyard
The vines of Roc d'Anglade benefit from an exceptional terroir composed of one-third clay, one-third silica and one-third silt overlying calcareous marls, a structure comparable to great Burgundian terroirs. The plots, oriented mainly to the north with a few east and southwest exposures, take advantage of this unusual configuration for the Midi, which preserves the freshness and natural acidity of the grapes. The vines, averaging twenty-five to thirty years of age, are farmed under certified organic viticulture (Ecocert) within the IGP Pays du Gard designation, with yields deliberately limited to twenty hectoliters per hectare for red wines.
The vintage
The 2008 vintage offered favorable conditions for balanced ripening of the grapes. The harvest, carried out deliberately earlier than regional standards, helped preserve the freshness and acidity sought by the winemaker.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for Roc d'Anglade 2008 are hand-harvested with rigorous parcel selection. Vinification is carried out with whole clusters using indigenous yeasts for around eighteen to twenty days, with deliberately moderate extraction limited to two punch-downs and two pump-overs per tank. Aging takes place in 225-liter barrels and 600-liter demi-muids for twelve to sixteen months. Bottling is carried out without fining or filtration.
