Description
Tasting characteristics and advice for Roc d'Anglade 2014
Tasting
Color
With a deep red hue, this wine displays intense purple highlights.
Nose
The nose reveals a complex bouquet of red fruits, notably raspberry and wild cherry, complemented by floral notes of rose and violet. Hints of fresh bay leaf and leather add an extra dimension to the aromatic profile.
Palate
On the palate, this wine charms with its remarkable balance between freshness and richness. The tannic structure stands out for its exceptional finesse and velvety texture, rare for a Languedoc wine. The palate reveals concentrated fruit alongside pronounced minerality and structural tension. The finish lingers at length with notes of dried fruits, mineral precision, and subtle spices. With around 12.5% alcohol, this wine retains an elegance and airy lightness that are uncommon in the region.
Food and wine pairings
This Roc d'Anglade 2014 is a perfect match for grilled meats such as a rib-eye steak or a herb-crusted rack of lamb. It also pairs well with roasted veal preparations, game such as roe deer or wild boar, as well as mushroom- and truffle-based dishes. Aged cheeses, notably Roquefort, also make a harmonious pairing.
Serving and cellaring
Roc d'Anglade 2014 can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve favorably until around 2040, with an optimal drinking window between 2020 and 2030.
A Languedoc red wine of remarkable finesse from Roc d'Anglade
The estate
Founded in 1999 by Rémy Pédréno, a former sales director who retrained in viticulture after studying with René Rostaing, the Domaine Roc d'Anglade spans 10 hectares near Nîmes. Rémy Pédréno now runs the estate alongside his wife Martine and Jeremy Stevenson. The domaine practices certified organic farming and quickly established itself as an essential benchmark for Languedoc, recognized by the Revue du Vin de France with a 2*/3-star distinction. The estate’s philosophy favors expressing terroir and pursuing exceptional freshness.
The vineyard
Roc d'Anglade’s vines benefit from an unusual north-facing exposure for the region, promoting remarkable freshness and aromatic precision. The terroir is made up of clay-silica soils over calcareous marls, with balanced proportions of clay, silica, and limestone, reminiscent of certain Burgundian terroirs. The domaine farms a mosaic of around twenty plots in IGP Pays du Gard, with vines ranging from five to sixty years old. Planting density reaches 4,000 to 5,000 vines per hectare, and yields are deliberately limited to around 27 hectoliters per hectare for reds.
The vintage
The 2014 vintage is considered excellent in Languedoc. Climatic conditions enabled full phenolic ripeness while preserving freshness, rewarding the estate’s patient approach to vine growth.
Vinification and aging
The 2014 Roc d'Anglade harvest was carried out by hand. Vinification was conducted with 80% whole clusters, using indigenous yeasts and no temperature control, in open vats with manual punch-downs for around eleven days. Aging took place over eighteen months in barrels of various sizes: one third in six-hectoliter demi-muids, one third in twelve-hectoliter muids, and one third in thirty-hectoliter foudres. This maturation on fine lees helped develop complexity and refine the tannins.
