Description
Tasting notes and characteristics of the Nussbaumer Gewurztraminer 2023 from Tramin
Tasting
Appearance
This wine reveals a beautiful straw-yellow colour, enhanced by golden highlights of remarkable intensity.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with refined notes of green melon, kiwi and pine, before unveiling great floral complexity blending rose petals, lily, ylang-ylang and gardenia. Aromas of perfectly ripe exotic yellow fruits, such as mango, lychee and passion fruit, intertwine with hints of orange blossom and delicate exotic spices.
Palate
The texture is silky, carried by a refreshing minerality and saline notes that intensify over time. This full-bodied wine offers a persistent and particularly elegant finish.
Food and wine pairings
This wine pairs wonderfully with Asian and spicy cuisines, particularly dishes featuring curry, ginger or cinnamon. It also goes perfectly with delicate-fleshed seafood such as crab and scallops, rich or applewood-smoked poultry, egg-based preparations like quiches, as well as full-flavoured aged cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
The Nussbaumer Gewurztraminer 2023 boasts remarkable ageing potential and can be cellared for approximately 7 to 20 years to fully develop its aromatic complexity.
The elegance and complexity of a great wine from Alto Adige
The estate
Founded in 1898 by Christian Schrott, the Tramin cooperative winery has become a prestigious reference within the Trentino-Alto Adige wine region in Italy. Spanning approximately 270 hectares, the estate is now owned by a collective of 160 to 190 member families and is chaired by Leo Tiefenthaler. Renowned for its commitment to sustainable viticulture, the property stands out for its ability to showcase Alpine terroirs, producing wines of exceptional quality under the DOC appellation.
The vineyard
The grapes used for this cuvée come from the Nussbaumer estate, a small plot located in Sella, on the heights above the village of Tramin in Alto Adige. The vines grow at an altitude ranging between 350 and 550 metres, benefiting from a 70% south-east and 30% south exposure. The soils, of great geological complexity, are composed of clay and gravel, topped with limestone layers twenty to one hundred centimetres thick, all resting on a porphyry bedrock.
The vintage
The 2023 vintage benefited from exceptional weather conditions. Above-average spring temperatures encouraged early budbreak, while a very warm May accelerated flowering. Although the summer experienced episodes of extreme heat, occasional rainfall helped prevent water stress in the vines. As a result, the harvest was able to begin nearly two weeks early, from the end of September, under ideal weather conditions.
Vinification and maturation
To craft the Nussbaumer Gewurztraminer 2023, the berries undergo gentle pressing after a short maceration. Fermentation takes place slowly at a strictly controlled temperature of 18°C in small stainless steel tanks. The must is naturally clarified through sedimentation, without any filtration. The wine is then aged on its lees in these same tanks until the end of August, before continuing its maturation in bottle for at least three months, for a total ageing period of at least fourteen months.
