Albert Bichot : Corton Grand cru "Clos des Maréchaudes" Dom. du Pavillon 2022

Well-marked by new oak, this red also features flavors of cherry, blackberry, black currant, violet, sandalwood and vanilla. An iron component seeps in as this evolves across the palate, its suppleness offset by a firm line of tannins. In the end, this is juicy, with fruit and oak spice notes. Broad, generous and meaty on the nose, this full-bodied wine marries bright, charming red fruit and beef jus with riper, fuller flavors of black cherries and blackcurrants. It gains ripeness, almost sweetness, as you sip, showing good concentration and amazing length on the finish. Built to improve with extended aging. From organically grown grapes. Best after 2029.

Another walled monopole in which there are two appellations: the bottom is Premier Cru Clos des Marechaudes and the top half qualifies as a grand cru. East-facing and can overripen easily, so it needs strict attention. 30% whole bunch. Aged for 17–19 months in oak barrels (35% new). Certified organic (Ecocert). Cask sample. Deep garnet. Rich perfume. Not great density but pretty red-cherry flavour. Neat, fresh and balanced. Really very charming indeed, even if I wouldn’t guess it was a grand cru if served blind. Dry finish. (JR)
