Decanter

The golden-hued Beaune du Château white from 2022 surprises on the initial attack with lemon peel and grapefruit aromas; with time, warmer notes of apricot and quince develop, along with some notes of smoky reduction. The texture is rich yet still vibrant. The grapes are from 10 hectares of vines spread over five lieux-dits: Aigrots, Tuvilains, Les Teurons, Sur Les Grèves, and Les Sizies; they are pressed as whole clusters and hardly settled before being run into cask for fermentation on native yeasts. Picking began for this white on 29 August to preserve freshness.

Stuart Pigott

Lovely aromas of white peach, ripe pear and white flowers with a discreet touch of lees complexity. However, the fine tannins and chalky character married to them provide an excellent counterpoint to that fruit. Bone-dry with a lovely chalky freshness at the finish. A cuvee from 5 different Beaune 1er Cru sites, matured in small oak barrels, of which just 15% were new. Drink or hold.

Cask sample. Ripe lemon fruit with an attractive chalky overlay. Tastes rich and creamy after the Fèvre Chablis. Plenty of fruit but not terribly long. (JH)

The elegance and mineral purity of a great white wine from Bourgogne

The estate

Founded in 1731, the Maison Bouchard Père & Fils is a historic institution in Bourgogne, France, established since 1820 within the majestic Château de Beaune. Recently acquired by the Artémis Domaines group of the Pinault family, the estate is entering a new era while preserving more than fifty hectares of prestigious vineyards. Committed to a strong environmental approach, the estate plans to obtain organic farming certification for its entire vineyard by 2025, thus continuing nearly three centuries of winemaking excellence.

The vineyard

This white wine from Bourgogne is the result of a meticulous blend of five distinct plots located within the Beaune Premier Cru appellation: Aigrots, Sizies, Sur les Grèves, Teurons, and Tuvilains. These complementary terroirs each bring their own geological and climatic signature, giving the wine its characteristic complexity and minerality.

The vintage

The year 2022 benefited from particularly favorable weather conditions, promoting optimal grape ripeness. This vintage stands out for its remarkable balance, offering a crystalline expression and great freshness.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes for this Beaune 1er cru "du Château" Domaine 2022 were harvested by hand on August 29. Pressing is carried out in two stages to preserve the minerality of the juices. Fermentation is conducted using indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for nine to ten months in French oak barrels (including around 15% new oak), followed by a resting period of three to four months in stainless steel tanks to preserve vibrant aromatic freshness.

Grape variety

The Beaune 1er cru "du Château" Domaine 2022 by Bouchard Père & Fils is made from 100% Chardonnay.
