The estate

Founded in 1731 in Beaune by Michel Bouchard, the house of Bouchard Père & Fils is a historic institution of Burgundy, France. The estate oversees a vast vineyard of approximately 130 hectares spread across more than a hundred prestigious climats. Since 2022, the estate has been acquired by Artémis Domaines, led by Frédéric Engerer, marking a turning point toward heightened quality standards. Under this new impetus, the estate has drastically reduced its production to focus on the excellence of its own vines, with a full transition to certified organic farming planned for 2025.

The vineyard

The Volnay Taillepieds climat is situated mid-slope, benefiting from an ideal southeast exposure for berry ripening. Its name refers to the small, sharp pebbles that once covered the soil and made manual work particularly difficult for the vine growers. This sloping terroir, composed of light brown clay, an abundance of pebbles and a limestone subsoil, offers optimal natural drainage. These conditions naturally limit yields and encourage strong aromatic concentration.

The vintage

The year 2022 was marked by extreme weather conditions. Following a particularly mild and dry autumn and winter, the summer recorded record-breaking temperatures with several heatwaves. However, life-saving rainfall in mid-August allowed the vines to complete their cycle optimally. The early harvest began at the end of August under dry conditions, yielding grapes in perfect health with a remarkable sugar-acidity balance.

Winemaking and aging
