Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Jeb Dunnuck

Made from equal parts Grenache and Syrah, the 2014 Corbières Grande Cuvée sports a deep ruby/purple edged color to go with lots of peppery herbs, black raspberries, graphite and cedary spice. Medium-bodied, supple, elegant and polished, with tons of charm, I suspect this will represent a terrific value and drink nicely for 4-5 years.

Wine Spectator

Gillian Sciaretta

Sleek and fresh, this medium-bodied Red wine shows blackberry, currant and spiced plum flavors. Dried herb, licorice and violet details mingle with grippy tannins on the tangy finish. Drink now through 2021. 3,000 cases made, 250 cases imported.

Nose of overripe red berries, sweet spices and pencil lead, melting and energetic palate, with excellent freshness. A tonic blend.

Description

Characteristics and tasting tips for "La Grande Cuvée" 2014 by Castelmaure

Tasting

Colour
The wine displays a deep, intense red hue.

Nose
Complex, the nose opens with aromas of black fruit and plum. It then gains depth with notes of garrigue and wax, along with subtle hints of coffee and wood.

Palate
Medium-bodied with an appealing texture, the palate is driven by lovely acidity and firm tannins. Together, they create a serious structure that stretches into a long, mineral finish.

Food and wine pairing

This wine is an ideal match for the cuisine of southern France. It will perfectly complement grilled red meats, game such as wild boar or venison, or slow-cooked dishes with aromatic herbs.

Serving and cellaring

"La Grande Cuvée" 2014 is best served at a temperature between 14 and 18°C. Be sure to aerate or decant it one to two hours before tasting.

The elegance and structure of a great red wine from the Corbières

The estate

Founded in 1921, the Castelmaure cooperative winery is a historic institution in Languedoc. This collective brings together winegrowers who farm a vineyard of around 420 hectares near the village of Embres-et-Castelmaure. Now run by Antoine Robert, the estate stands out for its exacting standards. It harvests exclusively by hand, and its production facilities combine century-old concrete vats with a contemporary cellar. Renowned for its technical daring, this winery exemplifies the success of a collective model dedicated to the excellence of its terroir.

The vineyard

The vines thrive in the Hautes Corbières, on the Durban terroir, at an altitude of around 300 metres. This wild landscape, infused with the scents of garrigue, thyme and rosemary, rests on a mosaic of soils combining schist, limestone, sandstone and marl. The Mediterranean climate, strongly shaped by sun and wind, ensures optimal ripening of the berries.

Vinification and ageing

For "La Grande Cuvée" 2014, the grapes are fully destemmed and then vinified traditionally in vats, without carbonic maceration. To refine its structure, the wine is then aged for 10 to 12 months in 225-litre French oak barrels, around 25% of which are new.
