Tasting

Colour
The red colour reveals a beautiful depth.

The elegance and minerality of a Premier Cru from Gevrey-Chambertin

The estate

Founded in 1720 in Beaune, France, Maison Champy is the oldest wine house in Burgundy. Originally a merchant, it became a producer of its own vines during the French Revolution. A pioneer, it notably collaborated with Louis Pasteur in the nineteenth century to modernise its practices. Recognised as a "Living Heritage Company" ("Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant") in 2021, the estate is distinguished by its commitment to environmentally responsible viticulture. Since 2016, Maison Champy has belonged to the French group AdVini, thereby carrying on a historic expertise.

The vineyard

This Gevrey-Chambertin comes from a renowned plot in the Côte de Nuits, facing south-east. The terroir benefits from a cool microclimate thanks to the influence of the neighbouring combe. The vines are planted on lean, limestone-rich soils, covered with a layer of brown and red clay-marl. The estate applies sustainable viticultural practices here, certified organic and High Environmental Value (HVE), in order to preserve soil health.

The vintage

2004 was marked by capricious weather. After a mild spring, June was marked by sharp cold that delayed flowering. The summer proved rainy, leading to significant disease pressure, before violent hailstorms struck at the end of August, drastically reducing yields. Fortunately, the return of dry, sunny weather in September allowed the remaining berries to reach a lovely concentration and optimal phenolic ripeness before harvest.

Winemaking and ageing

The winemaking of this Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Cazetiers" 2004 follows a minimal-intervention approach in order to reveal the authenticity of the plot. Ageing takes place over an extended period of up to 16 months. The estate favours very moderate use of new oak, opting for older barrels in order to preserve the freshness and natural expression of the fruit.

Grape variety

100% Pinot Noir.
