Chandon de Briailles : Pernand-Vergelesses 1er cru "Ile des Vergelesses" 2021

This deeply coloured wine is slightly reserved initially, but with time it opens to reveal smooth blackberry fruit and hints of mineral, earth, and rosewater on the palate. The grapes come from a tremendous domaine holding of four hectares in a single block in the centre of the slope, planted in the limestone scree of the combe. The wine is produced with a maximum of whole clusters (70%) and a minimum of sulphur during fermentation.

Subtle nose with floral nuances interwoven with red fruits; the palate is tightened by a touch of acidity that makes the finish fresh and complex.

It’s a touch withdrawn on opening; it needs air to refine its very slightly stewed fruit before a blood orange aroma appears. By contrast, the palate carries you away with a graceful touch, yet a tightly woven core that marks it for a very long ageing, thanks to a depth of flesh and the poise typical of great wines whose future lies far ahead.
