Description
The balance and richness of a Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux wine
The estate
Born into a long line of winegrowers, François Despagne inherited Château Grand Corbin-Despagne, located in Saint-Émilion, in 1996. Three years later, he set himself the challenge of creating a new vineyard. Rather than looking to Saint-Émilion, he turned to Castillon. With the help of his wife Murielle, he founded Château Ampélia, whose name comes from the Greek word “ampelos”, meaning vine.
The vineyard
This Château Ampélia 2024 is a wine from Castillon Côte de Bordeaux made from an 8.80-hectare vineyard on clay-limestone soils over limestone bedrock. The vines on this terroir are 30 years old on average. The vineyard is farmed organically.
Vinification and ageing
Mechanical harvesting with densimetric sorting. Plot-by-plot vinification with pumping over, rack-and-return and punching down depending on the lot and the vintage. Aged in vats (50%), new barrels (10%) and barrels that have held at least one previous wine (40%).
Blend
Château Ampélia 2024 is a blend of Merlot (85%) and Cabernet Franc (15%).
