Decanter

Smells so alive on the nose, crystalline but ripe blackcurrants with some liquorice and tobacco touches. Tar, campfire smoke – a charred element. Grippy and filling but in a soft, powdery bouncy, almost chewy sense – but not fleshy as such – round, massy and layered but so gently controlled that it feels more like a caress than a hug. To me it feels a bit more accessible than Calon can sometimes be in these early stages. Juicy mid palate, strawberries and cherries with the signature mineral, chalky grip on the finish. Lovely, true to form and very delightful. 3.4pH. 65% grand vin production. 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend.

Dark in color, the perfume delivers a wealth of red, purple, and white flowers from the start, then shifts to a display of red, with black pit fruits and berries. The vivid palate seals the deal with seemingly endless waves of ripe fruit, an array of spices, mint, and peppery chocolate. Long, refined, powerful, restrained, and focused, the finish seamlessly continues that theme. The wine blends 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. 13.6% ABV. Yields were 35 hectoliters per hectare. The harvest took place September 4 - September 20. This represents the earliest vintage in the history of the estate. The wine is aging in 100% new, French oak barrels. Drink from 2032-2065. 96-98 Pts

The most firmly constructed wine of the Calon stable of course, but it still delivers the combination of finesse and concentration that is typical of the best wines in 2025. Much more graphite and slate on the texture of this main wine, this is one of the wines that really showcases the highest potential of the vintage, and it is an exceptional Calon. So layered, iris bud, cassis, crushed violet flowers, espresso and cocoa bean. A slow unroll. 100% new oak. 3.6 pH. Yield 35 hl/ha, Harvest September 4 to 20.

The bouquet’s high definition is underscored by an incredible number of “pixels”! Freshness is evident from the outset. Notes of violets, blueberries, blackberries and spices are only part of the aromatic spectrum. We should also note the reduction—one of wine’s fundamental rights and a safeguard against even the slightest risk of oxidation. The bouquet shines with energy and a conquering ambition. On the palate, the wine makes a discreet entrance. It sets itself with precision and serenity, tracing a linear, creamy progression. Its power emerges late, like an asset kept carefully in reserve. Thus, the compact tannins provide exceptional support and join forces with a sharp, saline acidity to underscore an exceptionally reliable foundation. A wine still in the making, yet already brilliant. It has nothing left to prove; now it must “

Inky-black color. An intense, fruity, subtle and complex nose, developing into notes of very ripe black fruit in the glass. Ultra-precise on entry, especially aromatic through the mid-palate, with a classy, polished feel; the wine melts across the palate—juicy, deep and noble. It boasts a lasting, creamy richness without a hint of tannic bite. Impossible to spit. Blend: 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. Alcohol: 13.16% - pH: 3.6. Yield: 33 hl/ha. 15% press wine.

Description

A full-bodied Saint-Estèphe red wine with beautiful structure

The estate

Calon was the name given to the boat used in the Middle Ages to transport wood from one bank of the Garonne to the other. And in the early 18th century, the Marquis de Ségur, who acquired the estate upon his marriage, added his name to it, thus giving rise to the label of this 3rd Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Estèphe.

Château Calon Ségur remained in the Capbern-Gasqueton family throughout the 19th century until 2012, when the property was acquired by Suravenir Assurances, which continues the production of wines in a recognisable style bearing the hallmark of the appellation.

Château Calon Ségur has also become famous for the label adorning the bottles of the property. Since the 18th century, the heart has indeed been the emblem of the estate, paying tribute to the Marquis de Ségur's words: "I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart belongs to Calon". For nearly three centuries, lovers of Château Calon Ségur have continued to remain faithful to this iconic property on the Left Bank of Bordeaux.

The vineyard

Château Calon Ségur watches over a vineyard covering 55 hectares, of which 48 hectares are in production. Planted on a thick layer of Garonne gravel dating from the Quaternary period, topped with a fine level of clay of lacustrine origin, the vines, with an average age of 21 years, give rise to a great wine of Saint-Estèphe.

Winemaking and aging

Manual harvesting preceded by an initial inspection of the grapes on the vine. Vibrating destemmer and manual sorting table. Vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel truncated conical vats. Vatting for 18 to 21 days. Micro-oxygenation. Co-inoculation with exogenous yeasts and bacteria in stainless steel vats. Aging lasts 20 months in new barrels.

Blend

This Château Calon Ségur 2025 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (80%), Merlot (17%), Cabernet Franc (2%), and Petit Verdot (1%).
