Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Mercurey 1er cru "Champs-Martin" 2022 Château de Chamirey

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a bright, luminous red hue with lovely brilliance, which gains slightly in intensity upon aeration.

Nose
Initially forthright, the bouquet gains in complexity with oxygenation. It exhales subtle aromas of blackcurrant bud and white flowers, evoking lily of the valley and lilac, all underscored by a delicate, well-integrated oak note.

Palate
The attack reveals a perfect balance between roundness and acidity. The texture, silky and elegant, is supported by fine tannins. The tasting concludes with a persistent finish, marked by delicious notes of tangy red berries.

Food and wine pairing

This red wine pairs wonderfully with flavourful meats, such as grilled beef rib or braised cuts. It also enhances game dishes (venison, wild boar, pheasant), lamb in sauce, slow-cooked poultry, as well as blue-veined cheeses.

Service and storage

The Mercurey 1er cru "Champs-Martin" 2022 can be enjoyed now, but also offers excellent aging potential, and may continue to develop in the cellar for approximately 15 to 20 years.

The elegance and structure of a Mercurey Premier Cru

The estate

Built in the 18th century in Burgundy, Château de Chamirey truly began its winemaking history in 1934, the year it was established as a producing estate under the impetus of the Marquis de Jouennes, who introduced estate bottling. Today led by the fifth generation, represented by Amaury Devillard and Aurore Monot-Devillard, the estate spans 37 hectares, making it the largest property within its appellation. Managed through sustainable farming practices, the vineyard stands out for its prestigious terroirs and its commitment to Burgundian traditions.

The vineyard

This wine comes from a 0.49-hectare plot within the Mercurey appellation. Planted in 2002 at a high density of 10,000 vines per hectare, the vines flourish on a south-facing slope, at an altitude ranging between 230 and 320 metres. The terroir consists of clay-limestone soils, crossed by a distinctive limestone vein that promotes excellent drainage and deep rooting.

The vintage

The year 2022 offered very favourable weather conditions. Spared from spring frosts, excessive heat and disease pressure, the growing cycle unfolded optimally, allowing the berries to reach perfect ripeness.

Winemaking and aging

The harvest is carried out exclusively by hand. To preserve the quality of the berries, the grapes are brought to the winery within thirty minutes. The making of the Mercurey 1er cru "Champs-Martin" 2022 begins with a four- to six-day cold pre-fermentation maceration, followed by fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The maceration period lasts fifteen days with regular punching down of the cap. Finally, the wine is aged for approximately 13 months in traditional 228-litre Burgundian barrels, of which 20 to 35% are new oak.
