Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Bel Air" 2024 Château de Marsannay

Tasting

Colour
The colour reveals a deep ruby red hue tending towards garnet, which may show subtle brick reflections as it evolves.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of black fruit and cherry, underscored by delicate spicy touches and a vibrant minerality.

Palate
Balanced and imbued with lovely fruity freshness, the palate reveals a structure with tannins that are both powerful and silky. The long, refined finish hints at a future evolution towards notes of undergrowth and liquorice.

The Elegance and Mineral Precision of a Premier Cru from Gevrey-Chambertin

The Estate

Rooted in a winemaking history dating back to the seventh century, Château de Marsannay is a key figure in the Burgundy region. Located at the gates of Dijon, this 40-hectare estate embarked on a new era when it was acquired in 2012 by Olivier Halley, its current owner. Under his leadership and that of cellar master Cyril Chirouze, the estate stands out for its environmental commitment, crowned by Ecocert organic certification in 2022. The estate is distinguished by its terroir-respectful approach, combining sustainable practices such as horse ploughing with minimal-intervention winemaking.

The Vineyard

The Premier Cru Bel Air plot covers a modest surface area of 0.40 hectares in the northern part of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation. Ideally situated at the top of the slope and benefiting from an easterly exposure, the vines flourish on clay-limestone loamy soils particularly rich in stones. This terroir, which overlooks Grand Cru plots, provides excellent natural drainage and regulates the vine's vigour, thereby promoting optimal concentration of aromas in the grapes.

The Vintage

The year began with an early awakening of the vines in mid-April, followed by a delicate flowering at the end of May under summer-like temperatures. Rainy and cooler spells then led to coulure and millerandage. The growing cycle continued with heatwaves at the end of June, a milder July, then a return of intense heat in mid-August lasting until harvest time, all under very low disease pressure.

Winemaking and Aging

The making of the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Bel Air" 2024 is based on a gentle winemaking philosophy. Fermentation takes place over two to three weeks, favouring infusion and light pump-overs rather than aggressive mechanical punching down. This method allows the extraction of matter and aromatic compounds with great delicacy. The wine is then quickly removed from its fermentation vat to preserve its natural balance before beginning its ageing in the estate's temperature-controlled cellars.
