Description
The Authentic Expression of a Burgundy Terroir by Château de Marsannay
The Estate
Rebuilt in the 16th century after being destroyed during the siege of Dijon, Château de Marsannay is a historic figure of Burgundy. Located at the gateway to the Côte de Nuits, the estate oversees a vineyard of forty hectares. Since its acquisition in 2012 by Olivier Halley, the property has undergone a genuine qualitative revolution. Under the technical direction of Sylvain Pabion, the estate distinguishes itself through a rigorous parcel-by-parcel approach and a deep commitment to organic viticulture, elevating its cuvées among the finest references of its appellation.
The Vineyard
The estate's vineyard extends over high-quality terroirs within the Marsannay appellation. The vines thrive on slopes facing east and southeast, resting on soils rich in Bajocian limestone, mixed with clay and pebbles. Certified organic since 2022, the estate favours practices that respect biodiversity, such as Poussard pruning, horse ploughing, and the use of organic compost, in order to preserve soil vitality in the face of climatic challenges.
The Vintage
The year began with a period of intense heat and drought, causing marked water stress. Fortunately, welcome rains in June allowed the vines to replenish their reserves. Summer continued under high temperatures, ensuring excellent vine health and low disease pressure. Despite modest yields, the berries achieved fine concentration. The intense heat in September required an early harvest, which began on 9 September, in order to preserve the grapes' natural acidity.
Winemaking and Ageing
The Marsannay Village 2023 undergoes minimal-intervention winemaking aimed at expressing the purity of its terroir. The wine undergoes partial malolactic fermentation before being aged for 14 to 16 months in large oak barrels. The proportion of new oak is deliberately limited to 30%, with the remainder aged in barrels that have already held several vintages, in order to preserve the freshness and vibrancy of the fruit.
Grape Variety
Chardonnay (100%).
