Decanter

Marking its 30th vintage, Château La Mondotte continues to justify its stature as one of the smallest yet most compelling Premier Grand Cru Classé estates. From 70-year-old vines rooted in a 4.5-hectare parcel on the clay-limestone plateau east of Saint-Émilion, the wine reflects its terroir with precision: silty clay over a rocky subsoil, naturally regulating water and encouraging deep rooting, with excellent drainage and sun exposure ensuring full, early ripening. The aromatics are immediately captivating: crushed tobacco, violets, and a seamless interplay of red and black fruit. On the palate, there is remarkable energy and vivacity, the ripe fruit carried by vibrant, finely tuned structure. There’s both depth and lift here, a sense of concentration without weight, as everything seems to glide rather than press. A fabulous expression of site and vine age, and a standout in the appellation. Bravo!

Intense, deep, concentrated, multi-layered, and vibrant. There is lift, energy, and polish to the fruit on the palate. Rich, creamy, and powerful, yet balanced and harmonious, the finish delivers waves of sweet, supple red fruit with no hard edges, paired with a judicious touch of mineral essences that expand as they linger. There is so much ripe fruit that you can enjoy it on the young side, but you can age it for decades to gain additional levels of complexity. The wine blends 70% Merlot with 30% Cabernet Franc, 13.5% ABV. The harvest took place September 5 - September 19. Drink from 2030-2060. 96-98 Pts

The finesse and subtlety of the bouquet offer a familiar image of La Mondotte, yet seen through far more filters—far more delicacy, in other words. Floral nuances mingle with notes of red and black berries, and even a hint of mint. The tension on the palate is unmistakably typical, with plenty of muscle and less flesh than usual. You can clearly sense the estate’s evolution and the guiding hands behind it: they haven’t changed the framework, but they have reset the dials. Power is there regardless. The only question is how it will be approached, managed, and expressed. La Mondotte 3.0 is born! Sleek, vibrant, powerful, muscular, precise, and mouthwatering. Nothing is called into question—everything is elevated!

Description

The mineral and elegant expression of a great Saint-Émilion wine

The estate

The history of Château La Mondotte began in the early 19th century, with written records dating back to 1868. Located in the renowned region of Bordeaux, this estate was acquired in 1971 by the von Neipperg family. Under the leadership of Stephan von Neipperg from 1985 onwards, and later with the arrival of his son Ludovic von Neipperg as technical director, the estate rose to the very top. Certified organic and farmed biodynamically, this Premier Grand Cru Classé stands out for its deep environmental commitment.

The vineyard

The vineyard extends across the eastern plateau of Saint-Émilion. South-facing, the vines benefit from optimal sunshine and excellent ventilation. The terroir consists of highly silty clays resting on a rocky limestone subsoil, providing perfect water regulation. This configuration encourages deep rooting. The estate also stands out for the venerable age of its vines, with an average of 60 years, some even exceeding 80 years, thus preserving a rare genetic heritage from old selections.

Winemaking and aging

Harvesting is exclusively done by hand, followed by a rigorous double sorting. The berries, left whole, are vinified in temperature-controlled wooden vats with a 24-day maceration punctuated by gentle pneumatic punch-downs. Aging is split between 75% in French oak barrels (of which 30% are new) and 25% in wooden vats.

Grape varieties

This Château La Mondotte 2025 is the result of a blend of Merlot (70%) and Cabernet Franc (30%).
